Just to let you know that World Book Day is this Thursday (well, it is in this part of the world, anyway) and to celebrate Alex Barclay and myself will be holding two events. The first, in Kildare, is pretty much sold out, but the second one is in Easons in O'Connell Street, Dublin, at 6 PM. We'll be there, talking about... stuff... and books... and writing... and, er... annnnnyway...

RELIGIOUS PEOPLE ARE NOT MINDLESS ROBOTS
I don't think people realise that belonging to a religion doesn't automatically make you a mindless drone that thinks exactly the same as everyone else in the religion. People in a religion still have different views and are still human with their own opinions. What do you think will happen if you join a religion? Do you think they brainwash you with their special brainwashing serum? Or do you think your brain just disappears?
Religious Studies annoys me. People ask, "What would a Christian think about this?"
And I think, "Well, it entirely depends on who the Christian is as all Christians think differently, seeing as they're all people and people all have different views. Christians don't all think the same thing, you know."
They're meant to be teaching us how to understand religious people, but they are so not. How teaching us that belonging to a religion makes you a brain-dead robot helps people understand how being religious feels, I have no idea. They don’t exactly allow us to walk around the classroom pretending to be zombies. They mostly expect us to work it out, but seeing as we’ve never been zombies and don’t know how being one feels, that is rather hard.
They teach us about discrimination and stereotyping. They teach us that it is bad. But then they do it themselves. They stereotype religions, say that everyone who belongs to this religion automatically thinks this. ‘This’ doesn’t just mean an aspect of the religion. ‘This’ can be a modern issue that doesn’t involve that religion at all.
They don't tell us how it would feel to be a part of a religion at all. No, so long as we know what religious people are told to believe, that makes it okay. It’s like reading the school rules and expecting to learn how schoolchildren think from them.
Religions are a lot like political parties. If you look at speeches of David Cameron's, you can find out what the Tories are meant to stand for and what one of them thinks. But you have no idea why everyone in the Conservative party chooses to be in it, you have no idea what different views they all have on what their party should be doing. They'll all be in it for different reasons and will all have different views on what the party should be. Same with any political party. Same with any religion. People join religions for different reasons. They aren’t always just bored kids in them because their parents make them be. There are thoughts, feelings, realisations behind it.

One boy in my RS class said Christians were stupid for not reacting, that if someone called them a name they should fight back.
He didn’t know that a lot of Christians actually would. Some wouldn’t, some would rise above the insult and ignore it, but some would fight back. How can this be, you might ask, when all Christians believe the same thing? They don’t. They’ve all been told the same thing by God, but they interpret it differently to each other, and some just disobey the rules occasionally. Once again, this is like school rules. You’re meant to obey them all, but rarely does this always happen.
How can people interpret things differently? Well, imagine you were given the phrase “I have climbed a mountain.” Some people could think it meant someone had literally climbed a mountain, using harnesses and ropes and so on. Some could think it meant someone had walked up a big hill, and was exaggerating. Some could think it was metaphorical, and the person who had written the phrase hadn’t literally climbed any mountains, but had mentally overcome great obstacles. Some could think the same, except have a different interpretation of the metaphor.
There are billions of phrases like this in the Bible. Therefore, there are billions and billions of different views of the Bible and of Christianity. An example from Christianity is that most Christians believe that men and women are equal. Some think this means that women should be able to do everything men can, and vice versa. Some think this means they have equal worth, but different roles and different duties.
Also, the Church and the Pope do not speak for all Christians. Another person in my RS class asked that if Christians thought everyone was equal, why did they hate gay people?
Correction. Christians are meant to think everyone is equal. A lot of them don’t, because they’re human and are just as bad as the rest of the humans.
Also, not all Christians “hate gay people.” A lot of Christians, for example me and my mum, are in favour of gay marriage. A lot of Christians, however, believe that marriage is the union of a man and a women and that gay people could be the equivalent of married, just not call it marriage, as it is incorrect use of the word.
Another thing to say. Occasionally I chance upon Christian YouTubers who comment on songs posted on YouTube saying things like “everyone who listens to this will go to hell.” I am sorry, but I do not see how posting comments of this nature is meant to achieve anything at all. If you want people to join your religion, you have to be welcoming, and make them want to be like you. By posting comments undermining the music people like, you are not only angering people and making them hate you, you are giving Christians a bad reputation. Who would want to be a Christian when it meant being like them? Also, who would want to be a Christian if it meant they could no longer listen to the music they liked?
People in general don’t want to join religions. I’ve been talking about Christianity all the way through this speech, but this speech isn’t exclusive to Christianity. Christianity was simply the religion I could say the most about. People do not want to join religions, and people do not like religions, and people are not fans of religious people. And why is that? Mostly because people think that belonging to a religion means you have to think exactly what you are told to think, and also because a lot of religious people are jerks and people don’t want to be like them.
I said before that belonging to a religion was like belonging to a political party. It’s stronger than that; you often have to wear things marking you out as different, and more loyalty is required; but it is similar. You believe you know the best way of living, the best way of doing things, and you think that being in it will benefit you. Unless they’re concealing it, political parties don’t use brainwashing serum, and neither do religions. Just because you believe in something and want to follow it does not mean you suddenly surrender your freedom of thought.

One Direction have cured so many girls and boys of course around the world of depression and worse things that I won't name. They treat their fans (and haters) with love and respect. Yes, even the haters. They are involved in over 8 charities in Britain alone.
