Just to let you know that World Book Day is this Thursday (well, it is in this part of the world, anyway) and to celebrate Alex Barclay and myself will be holding two events. The first, in Kildare, is pretty much sold out, but the second one is in Easons in O'Connell Street, Dublin, at 6 PM. We'll be there, talking about... stuff... and books... and writing... and, er... annnnnyway...
Because this is somewhat last minute, I'm not expecting that many people to turn up to the Dublin event, which means it'll be a lot more casual and chatty than usual. If you're interested, get in touch with Easons to reserve a place, and we'll see you there.

It's because every single person here, even if they might not fully appreciate your situation, cares for you deeply. It's because you're a minion, and you're a friend, and you're you.

I don't know what your situation is in all it's detail, I could never know. But I can obviously see that it's not easy, and you know what? Life's not easy, and life's not fair. Some people have it harder than others and you're evidently one of those people.
But please. The people here care for you more than you might realise. And you're needed, here, and now more than ever, just so people know that you're safe.

I shouldn't be here right now, and I'm only posting this one comment anyway- but I'm reading past comments, and I have to say something. Zafira Kerias. I like you. I think of you as my friend. And friends are important to me. But I never want to hear anyone say Death is just posting comments for attention, least of all someone I liked. If Death has said she would do it a ton of times, it's because she's in a very, very dark place, and it only ever seems to get darker. You can't talk a person out of something once and then expect them to be fine. And not one single problem Death has was solved by us talking her out of it. I mean, she lived, which is the most important thing, but you cannot expect her to just be ok. Telling her to 'suck it up' is just... You don't say that. You don't ever say that. She's in pain- and when she left her comment, she seriously wanted to end her life, and telling her that she's just an attention hog is the worst possible thing you can do, and I won't tolerate that from anyone, least of all my friends. I already don't even like coming here anymore. Whenever I read old comments where someone was in danger, I get this awful sinking feeling, and I hate it so, so much. More than I can say. Because it's old, and I can't go back and help them. And when I read those comments and I know that other people helped them, I feel a little better. Not much, but a little. But when I read back and I see people insulting each other, and complaining about behavior- I feel infinitely worse. It's really not ok. What if she actually died? Just because she felt unwanted? We are her last line of defense, and no matter how tired or exhausted or done we are, we have to be there for her. Regardless of the toll it takes on you, you have to be there for others, and then they'll be there for you. This is supposed to be a sanctuary for people- not one that makes laws, but one that saves lives. One where you can come and be your beautiful, genuine self, and others will accept and support you. Support is most important in those dark moments. I don't mean to just criticize you by writing this, I just need you to understand that you can't do that. And I won't apologize for writing this, and I won't care if you're mad at me, either, because this is life and death, and I will do anything to keep my friends alive.

The chapter was kind of supposed to make you feel lucky. It was the entire point - to show how their race has no contact with the world. To show how kind of... limited, their world is.
I do kind of feel sorry for the Quarians so yeah. ^^

Because you're still awesome, even if you annoy me sometimes. And whenever I get annoyed, all I have to do is remember how you're awesome and then it's like sitting down when you've been walking all day without your insoles and your feet really, really hurt.
Everybody has bad things about them and good things about them, and the good wouldn't exist without the bad. So whatever faults my friends have, I have to try and remember that if they didn't exist, my friends would be personaltiyless an not the awesome people I know. And I'm not talking about just you here. Everyone has flaws. But those flaws are what make us what we are.
In other words, sometimes you annoy me, but it's all good beacuse you're awesome and you would be less awesome if you didn't annoy me. :)

Star, mhm. If I was actually comfortable with it then I'd go into more depth about how bad they are actually treated. Like slavery and stuff. But to be honest I like Emi as a character and I think it would ruin her... like she's kind of an innocent and inexperienced character and she'd end up becoming all tough and it isn't something that I want to happen if she was involved with anything like that - but I have hinted at them being used as slaves several times.

I like Emi the way she is. She's a fun character to write and she's an alien which helps because it gives a lot of different aspects to the Quarian life to explore.

One problem, though. I can't sya everything I think if it would offend people unless I'm angry. I break my rules when I'm angry.
I mean . . . I always say the truth (metaphorically. OBVIOUSLY sometimes I lie. But when giving an opinion, I'm generally truthful, because I can't really make things up well. Saying 'yes' or 'no' as a lie is easy. :) Plus lying is BAD! :O), but I often just omit everything that might cause offense or upsetness and just say the good truth. Which is actually really bad, because then you can't trust my opinions (well, you can. You can trust them absolutely. I am a truthful person. You just can't trust that it's all I think on the subject), and me saying good things to you doesn't mean as much.
Being honest is better than being nice in a lot of situations.
But anyway . . . yeah.
I do slip up and/or change my mind sometimes, though.

Rules do not work. Trust me. There was a while where Blogland had a chat group on a website called xat - and we tried to make rules. We started off with simple things like "don't annoy others on purpose" and slowly built up rules to try and make sure everyone was happy.
But it did not work. There will always be people who break the rules. Over the internet you cannot provide sanctions which renders the rules useless. There's nothing to uphold them.
There will always be people too who do not like being confined by rules.
Trust me, rules are just an open invitation to cause chaos.

When Blogland started, it didn't need rules. Ever. No offence, I mean- good idea, but I doubt it will stick.
WE shouldn't even need rules, it would make more people leave and- honestly- I think quite a lot of others would agree with me.
BUT, if we had a group of people who were going to enforce the laws... like police, in a way. They would have to think of possible sanctions (e.g. everyone would ignore the person for a set amount of time)... then it could work.
Several people would still argue against it, but at least we'd be able to enforce the rules.
I guess... people will just be people...
But we're fighting a lot more now than we used to!
Because- really- you can set things all you want, but you can't block anyone on blogland. They can break whatever "rules" that are set up, but they don't have to stop. We don't need rules, we just need common sense, which people sometimes lack, yes. But we can't change that

You could technically ignore them for certain periods of time... and have a thing to refer to so that you know who's on the block list, so to speak.

I think the problem is not the fact that we need rules, but everyone just needs to CHILL OUT every now and then.
Everyone is friends on here and we need to remember that. We all came here for one reason: because we all enjoy reading the Skulduggery Pleasant books. EVERYONE makes mistakes every now and then. It's not like any of us are perfect.
There is absolutely no reason for all this fighting - and I will stand by that. Everyone's imperfections make them who they are, and every single one of you are really great people and are fun to talk to. We need to make sure that every individual is treasured, as they should be.
Yes, some people are annoying sometimes. But it isn't nice when lots of people are shouting at you. If one person would kindly talk to them, fine. But not like 10 people shouting and swearing at them. That is completely non-productive and there is no reason for it.

I mean, I don't know whether it's just me being old, but people make such big deals out of nothing.
Several arguments have been caused about music. IT DOESN'T MATTER. Everyone has their own likes and dislikes and there's no reason why if someone doesn't like something or likes something, that it should cause an argument. Even if you feel passionately about something, everyone feels differently - and again I think it's something to be treasured, not something to argue with. Opinions are opinions and opinions can never be wrong.
There are some people who are in really dark times and they need understanding and help. But they cannot get this in such a violent environment. Everyone is shouting and swearing and being mean to each other - I'm one of the oldest people on here and I don't swear half as much as you lot do.
It just sounds cheap and nasty, and again there is no reason for it. Everyone just needs to chill out, and take a step back, and realise the pointless things they're arguing about do not matter. PEOPLE matter.

Just making it clear - I am NOT ignoring anyone. If everyone agrees to ignore someone, I shall completely ignore the fact I am meant to be ignoring them.
You know, I may rant at RS angrily from time to time, but my RS classroom has a wall on which are lots of words stating strong opinions about things with pictures ("Poor people should not have children as their quality of life will be poor" "Evolution is the only logical explanation" "Taking drugs should be a matter of choice and nothing to do with anybody else"), and there's a picture of these hands handcuffed together, and underneath it says "Crime & punishment", meaning that the two are bound together. Nearby, it says "Young people who break the law should be helped and not punished."
I agree with the latter, not the former. I don't think people should be punished; they should be helped, and also shown how to improve in ways.
I won't punish people.

Everyone needs to be more understanding.
Everyone is too quick to shout and swear and be mean to each other. That needs to stop.
People need to understand that everyone makes mistakes sometimes. And someone should KINDLY tell the person why they think what they did was wrong. Shouting? Swearing? It will not help.
All that will help is cooperation. Treat people as you would like to be treated yourself. Make sure that everyone is nice to each other and people explain their opinions fully before they start being rude.
Instead of all jumping at someone for making a mistake we need to make sure we understand them before pushing them away. We need to make sure that those who do make mistakes KNOW what to do to help and know they shouldn't do it again.

And I have an idea of what to do to make sure people are more understanding.
We appoint people. The most level-headed, clear-thinking and nice people on this blog to join together and STOP fights as soon as they start.
They should not get involved. They should try and calm everyone down and make sure that fights do not happen.
And if they do? Diffuse it as quickly as possible.
I tried a similar thing with xat. It didn't get chance to get going fully, though. But I'm sure with the right people it will work.
Also, we are not arguing. We are having a slightly heated debate that will be resolved in a calm and orderly fashion.
Question-
what if someone has anxiety, or anger management issues, or some other thing? How would you control that?

I think we just need more of the best of humanity. Which is much easier said than done, but we just need to all try to set our anger aside. It's hard, because that's just in our nature, and this is our place to vent, rant, and be accepted. And that's still ok to do if you're in pain. But being angry at each other doesn't work. I mean, anger is an emotion, you can't shut it off, but don't express anger. If someone does something you don't like, say so politely. I think we need better communication. Say so when something bothers you- don't let the feelings boil inside you and build up- but try to do so politely. Don't say 'I feel unwanted I know you secretly hate me' or 'it's really annoying when you do this' or

I have to agree with Dragona.
At the end of the day, it isn't about making rules or having mediators or giving people titles.
It's about conflict resolution.
It's the ability to calm a situation before it gets way out of control.
I know we are all worried about Rose, jesus I know I am. But unfortunately there is nothing we can do right now but wait.
However if Zaf comes on, maybe as her friends and comrades we can finally get to bottom on what's eating her away. Because I worry about Zaf as much as I worry about any of you. Even the newbies!
So I think from now on, it really is about being peaceful and making calm of situations before people get hurt or offended.
Adra, I didn't mean as a hierarchy. A hierarchy would imply that they would be above people. No. They will not be above people. They will only try and stop fights. Try and calm everyone down. They wouldn't be above anyone because they would be part of the 'everyone'. All they would do would be not to get involved in fights and aim to stop it with non-violent methods.
I mean, no one really needs to have a vote. People could volunteer.

Aretha, I feel like sometimes your characters are too powerful, that when they come on, the situation is automatically solved, which sometimes the fight scene or the problem is the best part. And when you might suddenly appear and cut it, I feel a bit discarded or overlooked

@the mediator thing: I do that anyway. Whenever there is arguing, I tend to step in, agree with everyone, try (fail) to think of solutions, try to make people clam down and see the other side, try to cheer them up, and be generally nice. *shrugs*
I'm not the only one (so let them criticise~), too; plenty of people do this.

I just... I just think we need to concentrate more in stopping fights instead of fuelling them. Violence cannot solve violence. Only peace will solve violence.
But there's no one who seems to be actively trying to stop it. There are people who make very, very valid points and try and calm everything down, but they're getting involved. And getting involved will just fuel things.
But if they were just trying to calm everyone down and not make a point of their own... as I said, that's why they need to be level-headed. It won't be easy.
I've been working harder on avoiding fights... it's hard. *shrugs* But I should try harder, I suppose?
ALso- Aretha, please don't feel the need to write a huge thing about that.

Adra, taking with your little kid metaphor...
If two children are fighting, the people wouldn't be stepping in the middle of them. They would calm them down, sit them down and make them understand WHY what they did was wrong. So it would give them a better outlook on life and better moral understanding.
Staying with the kid metaphor, that is. Nothing to do with teenagers but it's NEARLY the same idea.

Pacifist: Look, there is no need for this fighting. We are all friends and we should treat each other as such. Instead of swearing, just make sure the other person knows WHY you think the way you do.
Nothing to do with looking after kids. They wouldn't get involved, they'd just try and calm things down.
