I love German book fairs.
Every single one I've been to has been PACKED, and while that does tend to slow things down as you're trying to walk from one gigantic hall to the other, you really don't mind all that much. All these people crammed in around you are book-lovers, for god's sake. How annoyed can you actually be?
Over the weekend, I was at TWO German book fairs. The first one was in Cologne, on Friday evening, and I was up on stage with Rainer, the actor who does the German audiobooks, and Margarete, the translator. We've been doing this together for a few years now, so we're all quite comfortable with the process. The main difference between events in Germany and events everywhere else (apart from the need for a translator) is the emphasis put on the audio book. Rainer is as integral to the show as I am, and his readings make up half of our time on stage. The event in Cologne went wonderfully, and we had a really receptive audience, and I even spotted some familiar faces in the queue.
Once I'd finished signing, we went back to our hotel, where we had a very nice meal attended by the weirdest waiters I've ever encountered. One was tall, one was short, and they looked so alike that I started to suspect that they were the rejects from a batch of clones some mad professor had concocted in a dark and dingy lab. They were both wearing ill-fitting suits, both had the same type of glasses, and they both stood around and stared into space in the corners of the room while we were waiting to place our orders. So incredibly ODD.
Thankfully, we managed to escape the restaurant before they could kill us and harvest our organs to replace their own failing ones, and I got to my room and got into bed and put my head on the most deadly pillow the world has ever known. It was so big and so soft that when I put my head onto it, the whole thing folded up on either side and tried to suffocate me.
Convinced that the clone waiters were hovering outside my door, waiting for me to die, I slept without a pillow that night. I also slept sideways, because the double bed I'd been given was, in actual fact, two single beds pushed together, and I kept slipping down between them. Who knows what was waiting for me if I had slipped all the way? Scorpions? Tarantulas? Really lazy ninjas? Or maybe just a hole in the floor and a twisting slide that would deliver me to the mad professor's Experimentation Table of Doom?
I survived the night. Barely.
The next morning, we got a train to Frankfurt and then a plane to Leipzig. No attempts on my life were made during this time.
Leipzig Book Fair is half book festival and half comic convention. There are all these people dressed as Manga characters roaming around, chatting on their phones, browsing book shelves. Also, all of Germany had had a pretty bad winter, and there was piles of snow everywhere and it was pretty damn cold— and in the middle of it all you have these really cute German girls walking around in bizarre costumes that don't really cover a whole lot. They must have been FREEZING.
We did our first event, and although we only had a half an hour, it went very well. Such a huge crowd. The signing went on forever, and it was so cool seeing that many people wanting me to scrawl my signature over whatever they had.
The moment we were finished there we got in a car and drove to a graveyard. Because that's what you do once night falls, obviously.
We went to a huge sarcophagus-type place and we yapped in front of 200 people, doing our best to ignore the deep hole behind us with the old coffin. So just an average Saturday night, then...
Once that was done with, we went to dinner with a bunch of other people, including American author Maggie Stiefvater, and I sat at a big table with a bunch of people speaking German all around me. Best night EVER! Well, not quite. But Maggie is a funny lady.
Then I got back to my hotel. This time, my bed was a proper double bed, but the waiters had obviously followed me from Cologne because those damn pillows tried to drown my head again.
Sunday was my last day there. It was also Saint Patrick's Day.
(That's St PADDY'S Day, in its shortened version. Not St PATTY'S Day, as some Americans insist on calling it...)
I had an interview to do in the morning, and then I had two hours off before my event, so I went wandering through the halls. It was all so incredibly strange, and wonderfully so. It made me wish that Irish book festivals were like this. Imagine if The Mountains to the Sea festival had hundreds of teenagers walking around dressed as characters from comics and books. That would ROCK.
We did our event, signed for an enormous amount of people, and then I was whisked off to the airport to catch my first flight. I arrived back to my front door a little under eight hours later, tired but happy to be home, and looking forward to spending a night with my head on a pillow that doesn't try to kill me.

Hi is anyone there?
Probably not there's never anyone on at this time. I just get home from school a good bit earlier than everyone else. And then there's people asleep as well.
UGH OUR PRINCIPAL SUCKS :/
Hello! I am on my way to go to History Fair!
Nerrrrrrvous!
Distant, emailing Ari and reciting Shakespeare in an attempt to calm my nerves.
Be a better principal Mara's principal or the bloglandians will come after you. *glares menacingly at Mara's principal*
Good luck In your science fair Fabi.
[Nods]
Principal, admit to the awesome power of Mararararararararalieeeee!
I'm not sure if I said that right.
Huh.
Hi Mara, Aisling,
And uh, thanks Ais.
FABIGAIL YOU'LL DO AMAZAYNLY! :D
Hola Ais, Fabsy :)
MY TEACHER WAS SICK SO OF COURSE OUR PRINCIPAL MADE US DO TONS OF WORK THAT IF WE DIDN'T FINISH WE'D HAVE FOR HOMEWORK. *scowls*
And JUST as I finish the TWELVE pages of work so that I wouldn't have it for homework, he says, "Ah lads, you've worked too hard. No homework tonight."
I WAS SO ANNOYED.
EVIL Mara's principal EVIL. I hate it when that happens.
That's...eeeeeevil! It's like punishing those who actually accomplish things!
So I, being me, said, "Sir, that's not fair to the people who did the work."
He gave me detention.
What??? That's even WORSE. How dare you punish Mara for pointing out unfairness Mara's principal how DARE you. And not even rewarding those that actually did the work.
Wait primary schools can give detention? I'm lucky my school doesn't then.
I'll either make it to state or fail miserably!
Now I'm going to rant about several years ago, when it was a Reading Comprehension question from a book.
"When she was born, she was one. Then two months later, upon the new year, she was two. Then three....ten."
The question was how old she was the American way instead of the Chinese way.
Eight, because according to the calendar here, you don't get any older on the New Year, except for the obvious time that passes that day. However, Elmer (extremely annoying geeky I'm-better-than-you uncorrectable person) 'researched ages and China and heard about being one on the day you were born, therefore the answer was nine.' AND HE ARGUED UNTIL THE TEACHER ACCEPTED BOTH AS ANSWERS!
A simple reading of the passage would provide the correct answer, eight, and yet Elmer did 'research' and probably didn't look at the book! He won't go very far in life if he continues the uncorrectable attitude. Also, his name isn't Elmer.
THANK YOU AIS!
And some girls just played on their iPods/phones all day that they smuggled into school... ._.
Whoa, seriously not fair, Mara's principal!
[Sends torrent of uncontrollable and indistinct Shakespeare quotes in direction of principal]
If he said at the end of the day that if you had done MOST of the work you wouldn't have it for homework. Then the people who DIDN'T EVEN do ANY work would have to do it as homework.
Shall I tell you the story of The Invaded Bedroom?
It was a dark night. The wind was howling in the trees . . . well, it would have been if there were any trees. And in the midst of the trees that weren't there, there was a house. And in this house was a bedroom. This bedroom belonged to Star Inkbright.
Star, or Ink as she was sometimes known, was a (mostly) happy girl who had lots of friends (er, if you count the online ones), and she liked her bedroom.
But this particular night, a tiny, malevolent organism invaded Star's room. It knocked her out instantly. She didn't know she was unconscious, however. She thought she was tidying her bedroom.
The malevolent orangism stole her bedroom, all but her bed, and replaced it with a copy. Why did it do this? Well, this malevolent organism was an alien, from another planet, and it needed Earthly material to finish building a machine it was building. This machine was a weapon, vital if the malevolent organism wanted to take over a planet, and it did. Not our planet, another one; however, these malevolent organisms have taken over quite a few planets and are most likely aiming for dominantion of at least the whole galaxy, possibly the whole universe. (Some sources say they work for the Ezes, but the Ezes hide their tracks well so this has never been proven).
What was this copy? The copy was material from the malevolent organism's planet. This material can imitate anything it is programmed to imitate. However, it can't create an exact replica. Like Anathem Mire's illusion of his house was like his real house, the copy of Star's bedroom wasn't exactly . . . right. The shape was slightly WRONG.
When she woke up, still not realising she was asleep, she was at first happy with her new tidy bedroom. But then she realised it was a bit . . . off. She couldn't pin it down to anything specific, but she had this niggling sensation that all wasn't as it should be.
Eventually, being surrounded by alien material drove her mad, but nobody noticed as she'd been mad already. Thus, the malevolent organisms went undetected, and the evil Ezes undiscovered, as they shall continue to be until the day they take over our planet.
And that is the end of the story.
That's not fair!
Stupid Elmer.
O.O AIS YOU'RE SO LUCKY. OUR SCHOOL GIVES OUT DETENTIONS LIKE THEY'RE FLIPPING PIECES OF PAPER.
We just stand up against a wall in the yard and watch everyone play. I guess it's meant to make us feel upset that we can't play or something...
That would have been a bit fairer for people like you that actually DO the work.
OH MY GOLDEN GOD. MARA, YOUR PRIBCIPAL SUCKS! *hugs*
*PRINCIPAL
GOD THAT'S SO UNFAIR. *would eat him if I was an Ieni*
As I'm a Star . . . I can write a short story about him getting killed? :)
I will actually do this, once I've finished drawing 1D. :)
Exactly Ais! Instead of people playing Temple Run getting a doss day...
... Wow, Star.
That's... kind of creepy...
UGH. AND HE HAD THE NERVE TO SAY ONE DIRECTION WEREN'T GOOD SINGERS AND SKULDUGGERY WAS A BAD BOOK.
He hadn't even READ it! >.<
Yeah at lunchtime? My school used to do that if you did something wrong while in the yard. They don't do it anymore though since we got benches to sit on that are beside the wall. Thank you benches.
We called that missing break, and you had to stay in the classroom at break. Yeah. :)
THANK YOU STAR! :D
And I shall show all my friends. The Story of How Mr. S Died.
MWAHAHAHAHA.
I wrote that story because I am CONVINCED my bedroom is different now I've tidied it. It isn't just tidy. It is a different place. I swear it is. It's too different to be the same room. :)
We have a log area that our class made last year, and it has wildflowers and logs to sit on and stuff. We get time outs there, which isn't bad because you can chat to people there. But detention... IT'S SO AWKWARD.
Like I said though - too busy drawing right this second! D:
My room is the only place I can escape to for solitude during the day.
THAT IS WHY I LOVE MY BEDROOM(:
Well that does it. I'm going to go down to Tipperary, hunt down your principal and force him to listen to 1D music and read Skulduggery until he accepts that they're both amazayn. And then I will force HIM to stand against a wall and do detention.
Or I would if I had a car and was old enough to drive. Or I could get a bus or the train. But I wouldn't be able to *sighs* ah well at least I can plot ways to get the better of him.
You're so good at drawing! D:
My drawing of a chair looks like a pig, apparently...
Sorry I poofed!
I'm getting readdddyyyy to gooooooo!!! Eep!
He insulted Skulduggery without even READING it???? And insulting 1D around Mara is not good, Mr. S!
I will e very eryvweyvery distant nowww/msd!
Hi Star :)
YES. AIS THAT'S BRILLIANT.
And make HIM wear a uniform! Yeah! :P
Does Derek have ningas?
Cause if he does he should set them on Mara's principal.
Hi Star. That's a creepy story.
YES he needs to understand the awfulness that is a school uniform.
YOU'LL DO GREAT FABS!
Ikr! I was gonna go all sass on him!
My uniform is navy. When I go to secondary, I'll have a green dress and red cardigan.
I'LL BE A CHRISTMAS TREE D:
Msd, btw.
My uniform is navy too! It's a track suit.
And I'm not sure how to explain the uniform in the secondary school I'm going to next year. It's a yellow blouse with a sort of wine jumper and a kilt like skirt.
[hugs] Thanks Mara!
And your project is coming along nicely, just so you know. :-) I think I got |=_-|||=_|||=_||||| s hair wrong, but it was the closest I could do with |=||=-|||==|||==>
I have a tracksuit and a uniform :)
I'm going to an all girls school ._. I'LL MISS MY BROS, Y'KNOW?
I don't have a uniform, yaaaaaay!
I'VE GOT A PLACE ON THE BAMBERG MUSIC TRIP! WOOOOOO!
*runs around giving people random ninjaeroplanetacklehugs*
Msd though in a few minutes.
I can't speak your code, but...
*gasps*
IS IT MY BOYS?!
FABIGAIL I LOVE YOU. *tacklehugs*
[is ninjaeroplanetacklehugged] Hi Ieni! Congratulations!
[Throws confetti]
Suddenly distant!'
I'm going to a mixed school. I don't know if there is any all Irish school that are all girls or all boys. There might be though but I don't think so.
[is tacklehugged]
I'm not telling you that, sorry!
Lucky you Fabs! :o
IENI! CONGRATULATIONS! *Directionertacklehugs*
Hi Leni :)
You're so lucky you have no uniform Fabi
*giggles*
SECRETS!
LIKE SECRET SANTA
ONLY
IT'S NOT
CHRISTMASSSSSS
(Ciara, I do love you so XD)
I don't know what that means Leni but congratulations :)
Are there school uniforms in America? I'm trying to think an I don't think I've ever seen a movie set in America that has school uniforms in it. I know that doesn't mean that there isn't but t might. Fabi? Any other ameriminions?
It's not luck, exactly, it's being American. Only some of the private schools here have uniforms...the Forest Ridge one does, they're forest green, but that's the only one I know of. At least here, there aren't uniforms, I don't know about the rest of the US.
The sports teams and stuff have uniforms, and there are the burgundy school jackets we have to wear to field trips, but on ordinary school days no uniforms.
*it
I taught my teacher the lyrics to Tell Me A Lie:3
Americans are lucky... *pouts*
I don't think Kessie wears uniform either... I think she mentioned it before.
The public schools here are uniformless, the private schools vary. There usually are school sweatshirts you can use to 'show school spirit' but you're not required to wear them every day.
Most schools here have uniforms. I don't see why we need them when we're just in the school. I understand why we need them for trips but on normal days?
I have to go now and wear tie and go to History Fair in car now! Byeee!
Bye Fabi good luck in your science fair!
MOst American schools have no uniform. I read a lot of American books. I know these things. :)
My school uniform is ATM white shirt, black sweatshirt with school logo, black skirt and black or skin coloured tights or black or white socks/black trousers and white or black socks, black shoes, no extremes in styles and colour for hair, BUT THEY'RE CHANGING IT so we'll have V-neck jumpers or blazers instead of sweatshirts. -_-
Sorry for my distance. HARRY'S CLOTCHES WERE EASY TO DRAW! YAY!
Of course my story is creepy. It is me expressing my creeped-out feelings in story form. :)
HI FABI!
At my new secondary, we have to wear the school jacket. If we wear any other one it apparently gets taken off you. It's weird. It's to stop girls showing off, but still...
BYE FABIGAIL! *hugs* GOOD LUCK! :)
YAY FOR HARRY'S COOL CLOTHES!:3
Oh, they'll neve stop the girls showing off. Everyone wears short skirts made of tight stertchy material/trousers that are chinos-style, despite it being against the school's uniform policy and despite a risk you could get detention for it. I'm using the word 'everyone' metaphorically, but even uncool people don't wear skirts that are knee length. :) They let you off if it's within an inch or two of your knees.
:( FOURS FABI!
My friend is a silent blog reader and she reads our comments. She said "Youre blogfriends are so awesome! I can't wait to be Mara and Stars friend especially! they seem awesome!"
Hi!
Hi Brave
I'd hate to not have uniforms.
Uh, I wear the 'Miss Sexies' trousers and I have done since Year 7 so MEEEEEH!

Well I'm still annoyed at Mara's principal but apart from that I'm grand.
How about you?
Oh... what happened with Mara's Principal..?
actually, I'll just look at the comments above..
:P
Oh wow... that's really annoying
I know right.
We don't have detention at my school...
DAMN LOUIS.
gtg
Hi!
Bye Jubi :(
Everything Has Changed.
Best.
Song.
Ever.
Sang by Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran
I've never heard it Brave. But that's not surprising as I don't really listen to much music.
Wbd
Yayyy!
Gtg
Gtg I have a really bad headache.
Oh my God.
I think that's my principal.
Over there, sitting by himself. Eating a burger.
Damn, is he stalking me? 0.0
And after over an hour, Louis' clothes are finished! :)
Now, Liam!
*groans* WHAT ON EARTH DID YOU HAVE TO WEAR CHECKS FOR, LIAM?
*trudges in*
Tony Thaxton is leaving Motion City Soundtrack!
This is total devastation!
*pouts*
It's bloody freezing >.<
Hi, Taia!
D: I don't know who he is, but poor you! :(
Hi Scáth!
I'M NEXT TO A RADIATOR, BUT IT SHOULD NOT BE SNOWING ON MARCH THE TWENTIETH. *shakes head*
Ooh. Two people who don't know - I'm drawing 1D as a leaving preent for my friend . .
*present
I remember it snowed on Easter once. Damn, I'm being distracted from revision D:
SO, HOW IS EVERYONE? :)
Well, Star, I am reading my revision notes and remember how unhealthy I am. You?
Sorry I wasn't here yesterday.
I had an interview until almost six.
Then I had to make a source booklet for my history CA, which I did today.
I wrote my whole draft, but most people only got halfway through it...
I did well. XD
"SP-SP SP-SP-SPOOOOOOOONNNNNNNSSSS!"
*laughs*
Oh, AAOOD2... XD
LUCI! *tacklehugs*
I haven't Blogseen you in AGES!
It was probably only a few days... BUT STILL.:3
HI IENI! *hugs*
Wow...that sounds like hard work. Not for lazy people like me! Ugh, how am I supposed to know what this cholesterol is?
I think the last time I saw you all was the weekend. Feels like a long time with the amount of work I have done. D:
I've been so busy lately ._.
Crap, I should be trying to learn my French and Spanish assessments...
I sort of know my French.
But barely know my Spanish.
Tony is (was) Motion City Soundtrack's awesome drummer.
He will be sorely missed.
I respect his decision, but still feel the urge to cry, eat ice cream, and wonder how the Earth will continue to turn.
It'd be like Scapegrace leaving Skulduggery Pleasant, y'know.
Or Finbar, Clarabelle.
*pauses*
Derek, you'd better not do that to me. I still haven't got KOTW, yet. If anything happens to any of those three, I refuse to read the final three books, understood?
*nods*
Or, you could take a break, because too much work is BAD for you *nods*
My exams are tomorrow...
Up up all night like this all night up up all night *gasp* like this all night...
Mark Parsons is so funny! XD
TELL THAT TO ME, IENI! *was drawing for five hours yesterday, and has been drawing for two and a half so far today*
Liam's shirt looks terrible. XD
So far, Zayn's clothes are the best. Harry's are second best. Then Louis, then Niall, then Liam . . .
SOUNDS TOUGH, SCÁTH! D: I feel for you.
:(
Oh my gosh, it's Easter next week! I forgot! :o
HEEEEEEELLOOOOO
DUCK CTHULHU!
S'okay, it's only my sister. :)
I'm abandoning Liam for the mo and startiong on my homework. :(
Luci, I bet you'll get amazayn marks! :)
I got 8/20 in my Maths test... *laughs*
100% in spellings though, so I'm okay :P
Star, that's so cool! O.O
Liam always wears checked shirts. *grins*
And Harry usually wears a pair of glasses and has another pair hanging from a pocket c: and his blazer and a white t-shirt.
And Niall wears jumpers and polos...
And Zayn wears varsity jackets.
And Louis wears stripes and chinos of different colours! :)

And I need to get at least 27 in French... But I could do with a 29...
*curses Twitter and its miniature character limit*
Luci, I'm sure you'll do wonderful in your exams. :)
I recently had a tonne of mocks.
I managed to score 18/60 in Physics.
And then, on my other Physics mock, I managed an A*... O.o
..Gotta go.
*leaves hugs, cookies, ice cream*
Bye, all!
TAIA!!!

Fabulous, I want to do the next chapter (especially a Liberty-based one) but I kind of don't know what's happening--could you explain it to me?
EMBER!!!!!
hi.
*waves to anyone who came and/or left*
Extremely distant, sorry. Stupid homework. *sighs*
I hate the RS department anyway. I'm sort of nervous about tomorrow's lesson, because I critisised the RS department in my assessment and usually I'm very good and not a reb at all . . . *laughs*
*Walks in, wearing blue night gown*
I have given up on life
*Falls onto random couch
STAR!!!!!!!! TYLER!!!!!!
hi.
awwwww WHHYYY??
*Rolls over on couch to face The Jubster*
Because I have over 200 songs on Spotify and now I have to create a new account , thus getting rid of 2 years of collecting songs
*Rolls back on couch*

Hello all of you people!

I love my sister. :)
Three people state tey were going to fail in a row? *shakes head*
You aren't.
Learning languages test(s) - could you maybe record you saying your test and listen to it overnight, if it's in for tomorrow and it's unlearnt? Could help. :)
What kind of tests are these all?
*Waves a 'forget-about-it' hand*
Hi Leni.....
*stated they
I have French AND Spanish.
Nobody in the history of my school has got two A*s in CAs for two languages when done in the same day.
It's almost IMPOSSIBLE!
I'm probably going to fail my English test, because of my crappy teacher, but I should do okay in the science, because I've done a lot of work for it.
Yay, sisterly love! I generally get on better with my brothers than sister, but I still mostly get on with her:)
BUT TODAY IS INTERNATIONAL HAPPINESS DAY!
IT JUST SAID ON LE RADIO TODAY IS HAPPINESS DAY!
That's so cool!:)
*nods* Of course it's cool!
Ugh, just want to pretend some people aren't there.
I'm trying to write but failing EPICALLY.
I knew it'as international happiness day, because this person from this Goodreads group that I never go on messaged us all saying so. :)
*hugs everyone and looks happy*
My friend told me today *nods*
Yay! *happpyninjaeroplanetacklehugs everyone*
asdfghjkl Bastille<3
Got to go. Sorry for being distant
Byebye, Sev *waves*
Ugh, this writing is failing epically. It sounds so hipstery. I think it will be much more fun to make the character fall out of bed *nods*
And now she's talking to a shoe.
