And that's the PLOT written.
Now I go back to the very start and write the STORY. The story is different from the plot. The plot is everything that has to happen at certain points— the plot is the writer inflicting his will on the book. The story, however, is how we get to the plot. The story is what drives the characters forward. The story is what captivates US, the reader.
Naturally, there's a whole heap of overlap between the two. A lot of the time, plot is story and story is plot. But not ALL the time. And for this one, the war book, I needed to get the plot hammered into shape before I start to lather on the story.
Now I get to spend time with Val and her family. Now I get to write about Scapegrace and Thrasher. Now I get to have fun and make jokes.
If there's one thing I don't want, is to have a less-funny Skulduggery book. I like it when they're funny. The danger, as Val gets older and the books get darker, is that they lose their humour. I haven't read the first few books in a while, but I'd imagine there are a lot more jokes per page in the early ones than the later ones. I expected this, but there is still a certain ratio I have to keep. Even though you Minions respond to the emotional beats of these stories as they get more mature, no one is really wishing for a joke-free book, are they? Where's the fun in that? So now I go back and make sure that no matter how grim things get (and they DO get grim) or how dire the situation becomes (and it DOES become dire), we have enough jokes and laughing-in-the-face-of-death to see us through the darkness and out the other side.

“I guess this is goodbye, then…” I stare at the ground and force back the tears that are building up in my eyes. I’m scared that if I look up at him I will crumble, Now is not the time to show weakness, though, we are about to begin a war.
He pushes a lock of my hair behind my ear and kisses my forehead, “I’m never going to tell you goodbye,” his hand traces down my face and to my chin, now I can’t help but look at him. He presses his lips against mine, warmth flows through me and a wave of safety rolls over me; I wish I could be with him forever.
Our lips part and he embraces me in a hug, whispering in my ear he says, “I’m never going to tell you goodbye, because that would mean leaving, and that means forgetting. I don’t want to forget,” tears begin to roll down my cheeks and I hug him back tightly, I never want to let him go. “Don’t lose hope, I’ll see you soon!”
He lets go of me and allows himself to be dragged away to another group of Skuttlebugs, I don’t even have enough time to say goodbye. I watch as they instantly fall silent at the sight of him. He issues them all orders, allowing no emotion through to his voice or his face. This position as leader seems to age him; he looks so much more mature than normal. I’m starting to fear that this war will harm him so much I’ll not know who he is any longer.
He risks a look at me and a little smile, but that’s all I get before he turns back to his job. Maybe I’m wrong to be scared, he can turn off the leadership thing at will, it seems. I half smile at the group of Minions listening to his every order. If my group are anything like this, maybe it won’t be so bad.
“Don’t lose hope,” I tell myself, wiping my eyes with my sleeves. I spin on my heel and head in the opposite direction to Zacharia: time to meet my team.
Luci, that was amazayn! I almost cried. And then I was watching Geek Charming, so that didn't help. And then Moments came on shuffle. Cue tears. *hugs* It was amazeballs! Maratastmazfect! :)

That is to say, msd, almost breakfast time.
Ok then. [Randomly teleports Mara away] That should do it.
Zacharia and I watch them all pile off the plane and onto the tarmac, some people fall to the ground – obviously they’re not used to jumping off a plane. At least the plane was landed this time, most of the time it isn’t. Some of the scouts are waiting for us and Servus walks straight over to them, leaving myself and Zacharia alone on the plane.; we have to check the whole of the plane to make sure everyone is on the ground, along with all the resources, before we get off,
I’m glad we check, as well because, I notice a small girl hiding in a corner; she tells me she’s scared she’ll lose her sister.
“We’re all in this together, I promise.” I smile at her, hoping that I can comfort her enough to get her off the plane – I’ve seen her in battle before, she might be small, but she’s someone we’ll need. She’s 20 years old, believe it or not, but she’s one of our strongest weapons. “Who’s your sister?”
“Livi.” She answers, chewing her lip in a nervous sort-of fashion.
“Livi? She was one of the first people I met, back at the manor. She’s a really good friend of mine! She’s a tough one, I’m sure she’ll do fine, especially if you’re joining us!”
“I hope she will be okay….”
“She will be. She’s tougher than most people I know.”
She smiles at me and hugs me, “Thanks Luciana, you’re even better of a person than they all say. I better go. I think I’m supposed to find out where I’ll be helping out…” she lets go of me and scurries off. I can’t help but feel a pang of guilt; she’s so thin and frail and I just possibly sent her to her death.
I stare at the corner where the girl had just been sat, until a pair of arms wrap around my waist. “You did the right thing, don’t feel guilty. It was her choice to become one of us. We’ve all been training for this for years.” I feel Zacharia’s breath on my neck and avert my eyes to the window.
“I don’t feel guilty. I was just, uh, looking at the weather. It looks like we’re going to get a really dry night…”
“Oh, sure, you were just looking at the weather,” he laughs. “Its okay, Luce, I know how difficult it is for you to send family off to fight: you watched your family die when you were nine. You were forced to endure that pain and you’re scarred by it, I don’t know how you can do this, but you’re incredible.” He kisses the back of my neck, where I have a tattoo of a rainbow jigsaw piece, to symbolise my differences and how life is a puzzle. “Come on, we better get off, too.” He steps back and takes my left hand, instead.
We walk, hand in hand, to the open door and share a look, and silently count to three. We jump at the same time, not parting our hands, and landing on our feet with great ease. I notice a couple of stunned looks and a couple of people clap, I just laugh. My hair is beginning to fall out, already; I decide to tie it up when I issue orders later on.
Zacharia guides me away from the crowds of Skuttlebugs, so that we’re alone once again. I know now that he’s given us only a couple of minutes of peace and quiet before we must part ways, and hope that the other survived this war.
