Curse of Kings

It took me ages to get into fantasy books.

For most of my life, I had no interest. I didn't want to read about some made-up place that never existed and people running around with swords and elves and trolls and dragons and whatnot. I wanted stories set in reality, in the modern day. Fantasy films were fine, but I only had to spend two hours watching those. Reading a fantasy book was altogether different.

I never read The Lord Of The Rings. My brother did, and whenever he spoke about it I could sense the frustration in his voice whenever he talked about the endless songs and silliness. I liked the movies, of course. Well, I liked the parts in the movies where they focussed on the humans. Hobbits I could do without.

And then I read a review of a book called The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie. The review said this book had blistering action and fascinating characters and the whole thing was held together by acerbic wit. And that was the thing. Wit. Humour. For me, fantasy books just seemed so incredibly po-faced, like they took themselves way too seriously.

So I picked up The Blade Itself, and I loved it. I loved everything about it. I loved every single thing about this book and it was fantasy, so I asked myself— what else have I been missing out on? And the series that was recommended by quite simply everyone was George RR Martin's A Song of Fire and Ice— which later became known as the Game of Thrones books, thanks to the TV show. So I read that, and I loved it. I read the next one and the next one and the next one. I loved them all.

All this is a (very) roundabout way of introducing Curse of Kings, by Alex Barclay.

Alex is a friend of mine. She's a crime writer by day, and has recently become a fantasy author by night. I love her crime novels. I never know what the hell is going on until the final few pages, and I am technically in love with her main character, Ren Bryce. Ren Bryce is the most awesome woman in the world, and I don't care that she doesn't actually exist. She exists for me, and that's what matters.

Alex's crime novels are thoroughly modern and laced with one-liners and sarcastic asides, so when she told me she was writing a fantasy novel for younger readers, I was thrilled.

(Unless she's reading this blog. If you're reading this, Alex, I wasn't thrilled. I was the opposite of thrilled. I was un-thrilled. I was de-thrilled. It takes a lot more than YOU to thrill ME ands that's no mistake. Damn right. Darn tootin'. I'm going to stop talking about this now. Hell yeah.)

Curse of Kings has it all. It has kingdoms and heroes and villains and secrets and mysteries and swords and killing and monsters and monsters and monsters. Did I mention it has monsters? It does. Lots of them. And they're all... weird. Oh, and the book also has lamprey eels. Do yourself a favour. Search Google Images for lamprey eels. Go on, I'll wait. Just type it in and take a look... go on...

Yes. There are things THAT disgusting in real life.

I'm not going to go into detail about the Big Mystery in Curse of Kings, because even mentioning what the mystery hinges on could spoil it for you, and I wouldn't want to do that. Hopefully it'll take you as much by surprise as it did me.

And if all that doesn't convince you, take a look at  one of the coolest book trailers I've seen in a long time. And pay attention to the man whose quote they use on the cover. He sounds like he knows what he's talking about.

More sirens... Frantic ones... Two or three vehicles from the sound of it.

Living so close to a fire station is going to drive me insane someday...

Willow Von Stratton said...

I live like 7 miles from a hospital, so we hear the ambulance a lot.

Anonymous said...

I live about a mile away from the fire station, right off this busy road... Basically if it turns right while leaving the station, I will be hearing it in thirty or so after it leaves.

I guess I just assume it's a fire since fire and I don't get along, but I'm not too far from a hospital either. And some of them might be police, too, I guess. Usually it's not so bad I hear about it later.

Anonymous said...

On a brighter note, if I have some sort of emergency, help won't be too far away.

Willow Von Stratton said...

Yup, that is a bright side. I may hear them often, but they never last long.

Anonymous said...

I live in a very quiet area, for the most part, so they're audible for a long time. They're about 5 days a week, at least that's how often I hear them. I'm not always at home. If its really late, and not many cars are out, they make noise less frequently. Sorta like windshield wipers, they have fast and slow sirens, continuous sirens and ones that are only when they see a car that they need to alert...

Willow Von Stratton said...

My area is quiet also, but i don't hear them for as long since the sirens are shut off once they get to the hospital. Plus all the sirens where I live sound the same :P

Anonymous said...

Really? I thought they all varied.

I usually hear them leaving as supposed to entering the fire station, so they turn on, get louder for a while, get really loud and make me freak out, quiet a bit and eventually fade into the distance. Or, like last-ish Wednesday, they stay really loud and close and make me freak out.

I'm very irrational about fires, and I assure you, the hatred is mutual.

Anonymous said...

*as opposed to

I hate autocorrect.

Willow Von Stratton said...

They always sounded the same to me, the sirens. But then again i never really payed attention.

Bad experience?

Anonymous said...

Yeah. You could say that.

I can't NOT pay attention.

Willow Von Stratton said...

That sucks, I'm sorry to hear.

I'm pretty good at tuning things out, always have been.

Is it bad that I'm actually freaking out because the boxes in my room are making me so claustrophobic that I want to start shrieking in a corner?

Anonymous said...

Is there somewhere you could move the boxes?

Anonymous said...

Oh, I didn't answer your question...

Well, it's bad that you're feeling uncomfortable in your own room.

I would probably be freaking out just as much, so I'm not really in a place to blame you as far as wanting to shriek goes...

Valkyrie V. - Ivy said...

No, because my new room is too bloody small, and everyone decided to use the storage in my closet for something else.

But seriously, I'm actually freaking out. This isn't good. I almost fell over to curl into a ball, but there was no room on the floor.

Valkyrie V. - Ivy said...

I don't know how my mum expects me to deal with this, because she keeps saying, "Oh, there's plenty of room, stop whining," when I complain about how I have no room in my closet and...

My hands are shaking because of my claustrophobia. It's making it difficult to type correctly.

Maybe you should go into a different room for a while?

Valkyrie V. - Ivy said...

But I can't go in a different room. This house is a mess.

Also, it's over a hundred years old and really creepy.

Valkyrie V. - Ivy said...

Sorry if I'm really whiny. I need to look at something other than the room.

Waaaay different. It stands for two things he always talks about. His DS and Legos.

(Whoops! From this point on, it's LD)

This is a kid I have to babysit.

Anonymous said...

LD and his brother ate my brains last summer.

That was when he went through a zombie phase...And of his little brother had to do everything big brother was doing... They were jumping and climbing on me (I made the stupid mistake of sitting in their presence) and pulling my hair (HEY! I LIKE my hair!). And then they "ate my brains" I didnt want to beat up the kid, but seriously!

I don't know where the idea that I'm good with children came from...

I'm reinventing my handwriting!!!!! My idea of neat handwriting is wide, in line and not-joined-up. My handwriting is small, joined up and the letters blur into one another - you know my mind plays word association, so when I want to type use I may end up typing just, and I worte beforing instead of before the other day? Well, when I'm writing, I may be thinking about the letter after the next and so write that one instead of the letter I'm meant to write next. -_- Plus I write realy quick and it goes all wild and scruffy.

So I'm redoing my handwriting. To expect me not to join it up is too much to ask of my brain, but I've made it go all fancy. My new handwriting with be in italics, and I will do a little tail before each letter as if I'm joining it up from a previous one, and all my capital letters will be fancy unless it's a capital i in the middle of a sentence, and I will join up my Ys and Gs, as I don't atm . . . *nods*

After a bit of thought, the best and easiet way to practise this handwriting is to just write out song lyrics, so I've written out half of Divide and it looks pretty awesome. Now I have to cross my fingers and hope I manage to stick with it. :)

Star Inkbright said...

Ah, my handwriting is terrible. At my primary school, we all had to write in black fountain pen. No blue pens. No biros. And they all taught us special *insert name of school* handwriting, so we all had to do our letters just the way they told us.

Bad system. Okay, it looked neat back in primary, but then it deteriorates. Joined-up handwriting has more of a tendancy to deteriorate than non-joined-up. 805 of the people I've seen who used to go to my primary have handwriting that has deteriorated.

So, and this applies to many aspects of my primary, they may think they're so special and that all their special ways of doing stuff are so awesome and make the kids so much better, and maybe they're right as far as primary is concerned, but when they go to secondary, they're in a worse position eventually. *nods*

Like, my primary teaches us all this stuff that primaries don't usually. They have cooking now, even. They get more advanced with the years. And my mum was always like "That's bad because it ruins high school," and I was always like, "Yeah, whatever," but now I am at high school, and I come home and say excitedly about this new thing I learnt, my sister's often like, "They told us that last year," and I'm like, "But that's no fair! You shouldn't know that now! You need to leanr that in year eight!"

And when they get to high school, they'll just be RELEARNING it and they'll already KNOW it and it'll just be BORING and NOT SPECIAL ANYMORE and I'm just grrr at my primary for ruining it all. *nods*

Why can't they just been content to be a primary school? This isn't about the kids, you know right? This is them trying to make their school look good. The more stuff they teach the kids, the better they'll get Ofsteaded. Like in Year Six you do so much work for your SATs and so much preparation, and yet your SATs have no affect on you whatsoever. SATs rate the school. My mum looks at the SATs scores to see which schools are better. Everyone does. The schools like my primary wan to be at the top of the leaderboard, so they spend months preparing the kids and telling them it's important and it'll affect which sets you're in at secondary. NO. It has nothing to do with the kids. The only way it affects the kids is that they have to work like demons for them. It's controlling and grrr. The CATs test, THAT is the one that determines which groups etc. you're in at secondary, and we don't know we're even DOING that one till like the day. It's not marked as being important at all. Why? Because it doesn't matter to the school. They say they care so much about the kids learning well and getting into good groups at high school, but they don't - they just want to look like they do, get good scores in our tests, and look like a good school.

Sorry. I went right of subject and started ranting, but I am angry . . .

And then I wrote out a whole new thingymajingy, going even more off subject, but then my comment was too long to post. :P

So TBC.

Star Inkbright said...

HOWEVER, we do end up being better in school because of them making us learn well, even if their intentions are to make the school look good.

We're just doing about democracy and dictatorship in History, and - when people vote for a leader, the politicans all try to be really good to the people and do tons of good things for the country (note: the key word is TRY. Cuts are not good things, Mister David Cameron. Nearly everyone thinks you're a rubbish Prime Minister, and that may sound a little harsh, but it's because you ARE. Apologies if I insulted you) so people want to vote for them. In a dictatorship, the dictator will (if there aren't any violent revolutions and blah) be in charge anyway, so he OR SHE doesn't bother trying to do good for the people and the country, because what's the point? He OR SHE doesn't need people to like him OR HER to stay in power. Okay, you may not get many female rulers of country, but still, the OR SHEs are necessary. *glares*

So, even though they're doing it for selfish, power-hhunry reasons, more good (in theory) gets done for the country and the people in a democracy. *nods*

Sir willl probably tell us all this next lesson, and I'll just be sitting there fuming because when I work things out before anyone else I like them to know it. I know, I know. Star never claimed Star was a nice person. :P

Not-joined-up is neat, Mara. :)

And Maraaaaaaaaaaaaaa, I've had Gotta Be You stuck in my head for . . . approximately seven hours and counting. Before that, I had One Thing stuck in my head for three hours, with Up All Night occsioning bouncing in. This is all your fault. XD *bops Mara on the head*

1D's songs are so easy to remember, and so easy to think about. That is probably down to careful planing whilst song writing. Grrrr-ness.

Ah, my tall letters (b, d, h, k, l) come to about a millimetre below the line above. They've been trained to do tht by my primary. :)

We had to write in pencil at my primary until they declared our handwriting neat enough, at which point we were ceremoniously presented with a pen to use.

Most people got their pens in year three. A few got them in year two. In year four we had to start over and earn them again.

Yes, earning, they called it. You wrote in pencil until you earned your pen.

JA, AWESOME DED! :)

Our half term starts on Saturday, Mel, and lasts a week, because it is an English half term and that is what they always do. :)
