Molly's Blog Post

Okay FINE, so we're all waiting for the Tanith cover... It's looking like a Friday reveal right now- so long as we suffer no more delays. Believe me, once you see it you'll know it's been worth the wait. Tom's best cover. Ever.

Speaking of awesome covers, take a look at these.

Isn't that brilliant? There is literally nothing about this cover that I do not love. And there's more!

I know Suz Korb is a Blog-reader and she's commented a few times, but just take a look at these books she's written. And the titles! Pulpy, trashy, and so much FUN.

You know that old saying, never judge a book by its cover? That's not always applicable. People who judge my books by Tom's covers know exactly what they're getting- awesomeness on a page. And if a writer has enough taste to approve these covers, as Ms Korb obviously does, then that bodes very well for what's inside. From what I know, they're all available online.

Okay, I didn't actually intend to show all of these covers, but once I started I just couldn't stop.

This Blog post, by the way, is for a girl called Molly, who I met today in Forbidden Planet in Dublin. There I was, perusing the shelves, building up the stack of comics in my hand, and then I hear a "Excuse me, can I ask you a question?" from right beside me. I turn, and there stands a fifteen-year old in a really odd hat.

She was, as you can imagine, overjoyed at meeting me. We talked about her nonsensical love of all things Transformers (except the movies- she has issues with the movies) and her appreciation of Batman and how she never could get into Wonder Woman. That led to a conversation about lassoes, and then to a conversation about lassoing horses, and then to a conversation about how cowboys don't lasso horses, they just run after them when they want to catch them. Bless her, she has a small brain.

So this is a Blog post for Molly. Happy birthday Molly.

I've been watching some movies lately. I saw The Amazing Spider-Man last week. Not as bad as I'd been led to believe. I quite enjoyed it, in fact. Andrew Garfield didn't have to cry NEARLY as much as Tobey Maguire, and of course Emma Stone is just divine. I could watch her in anything.

The Dark Knight Rises is out now, of course, but I'd already seen that in the cinema. Not perfect, and some of the story just refuses to make any kind of sense, but a fitting end to the trilogy. I am in awe of Christopher Nolan's ability to generate atmosphere, and then use that atmosphere to make the audience dread what is about to happen.

I've been playing games as well. Just finished Hitman: Absolution. Awesome stuff. I want to play it again and not fire a single shot. Now that's a challenge...

I had been playing the new Assassin's Creed game, but got bored.

Dishonored, however, is a game that did not bore me. The thought and the imagination that went into building that world is staggering. Loved it.

Basically, I've been fitting as much as possible into the last few weeks because I think I've started Book 8... It's all very random at the moment, very casual, just writing a few bits and pieces, a few scenes here and there... but yeah... I think I've actually started. I had a look at the plot a few days ago, to remind myself of what's in store. I've already got it planned out to a degree- I did that a week or two after finishing KOTW- and wow. A LOT happens in this book. Like, SERIOUSLY. It's going to take a lot of planning on my part. War is like that. Complicated. Got to remember who's on who's side and where they are and when certain things take place and who's around when certain people DIE HORRIBLY.

Be warned. There will be horror. There will be slaughter. There will be betrayal and hatred and love and there WILL be blood.

Drew O'Connor said...

I'm not allowed write while I'm healing...

But they didn't count on me thinking the story...

Still only 2 chapters written, that's not on.

And hand writing isn't as big as it's made out to be Nix, it's a pain in the arse.

Nixion Strange said...

I know, but I'm not going to be able to type Em, so...

Drew O'Connor said...

Why aren't you able to type??

Nixion Strange said...

I'm lost my laptop. You already knew this...

Drew O'Connor said...

Oh yeah!!

Sorry, brain shut down for a second.

Well hand writing is just as easy as typing... the only difference is your using a pen.

Nixion Strange said...

You just said it was a pain

Drew O'Connor said...

It is a pain but it's easy to do and you have a lot more room to jump around and just scribble...

It is still a pain though cause when your stuck, you just end up doodling...

Nixion Strange said...

Yokay

Mycroft Holmes (Ember) said...

I can't wait to see who'll die, provided it's not China. I love China.

Maybe Ghastly will die. A very small part of me wants Ghastly to die. He's dull.

And I am VERY VERY VERY excited to see who betrays who. Betrayal is always fun, provided it doesn't happen to you. Which it's not going to, because you know, it's a book.

Basically, as long as China doesn't die, I'm happy.

Kribu said...

So there's a chance of the Tanith cover tomorrow...
*prepares to get all excited again*

Also, I'm looking forward to book eight so ridiculously much that it's not even funny any more... Even knowing that people will die.

(Well, whom am I kidding? "There will be horror. There will be slaughter." is enough to make me all eager. The "love" part is making me very, very curious, though......)

Star Inkbright said...

YAY! EM IS UP AND ON THE BLOG!

Unknown said...

September Silver! Don't want Ghastly dead! He's awesome, and even if he wasn't, the Torment or someone like that would probably end up being and Elder to replace hi.

Kribu said...

Didn't the Torment die? In Mortal Coil?

I don't really want Ghastly dead either, but out of the main people still around, I'd probably be the least distraught if he died at some point.

Unknown said...

Eh, someone like the Torment I meant. Just an example

Kribu said...

Hmm. Well, Mist is already an Elder. But yeah, I know what you mean.

I have to admit that someone less nice replacing Ghastly as an Elder is about the least of the reasons why I'd rather not have Ghastly die, though. :D Mostly I'd just miss him!

Mycroft Holmes (Ember) said...

OK, fair enough, true. I just find that he's a little dull every now and again.

Mycroft Holmes (Ember) said...

And it's true-- having another elder would SUCK.

Kribu said...

Ghastly is a bit dull only in comparison to Skulduggery and others... also, I think they need someone like him around, to balance Skulduggery (or, on the Council, Ravel) and offer a counterpoint, someone more stable and reasonable.

Mycroft Holmes (Ember) said...

Good point. Still, reasonable? REASONABLE? This is SKULDUGGERY PLEASANT for goodness's sake.

(Then again, I'm weird. I adored Tesseract, and he was dull in a kind of silent way.)

Mycroft Holmes (Ember) said...

(And yes, the love part makes me very excited too, although we may end up getting let down.)

Kribu said...

You do need someone reasonable to both counterpoint and emphasize the crazy/funny, though.

If absolutely everyone was hyper and gung-ho and screamingly funny all the time, I don't think it would work as well - you need a tiny bit of balance there.

Anyway. Ghastly is needed. :D Although once he's served his purpose and the series is over (or close to over), then, yes... well. We'll see.

And yes. That "love" bit. Me, being me, is hoping for some proper Val/Skul loving, of course, but for all I know, it could be something to do with Ghastly and Tanith, or... dunno, Ravel and Mist. Or Val's parents. Or Val falling madly in love with Kenny.

Mycroft Holmes (Ember) said...

How did you know about my Mist/Ravel obsession?

Keeping my eye on you...

Anyway, I agree about the Ghastly thing. I'm still going to dislike him though, because that's just me.

Kribu said...

Just a lucky guess? :D But they'd be so cute together. Until Mist stabs him in the back or pours spiders all over him, I suppose.

Although that might be cute too.

Also, for all we know, Ravel is secretly on Mist's side anyway, I suppose. (Do we know his eye colour? Hmm...)

I'm trying to not get my hopes up with that "love" part, anyway, and maybe focus on looking forward to the slaughter and the blood instead... (Although if we were to get some more nice sweet Vile/Darquesse moments, it would be much the same thing anyway.)

Mycroft Holmes (Ember) said...

Oh that would be epic. Just imagine blood covering the horizons, illuminated by a strip of moonlight peeking through the clouds, as Vile and Darquesse hold each others hands, trying to crush their bones. Good times.

Anonymous said...

I love the Vile/Darquesse moments. They're fantastic, they are.

msd

Kribu said...

I know! And Darquesse so very clearly has the hots for Vile - it would work out so well.

All the blood and gore and bits of Darquesse's intestines and bits of Vile's broken bones covering the ground...

Only a very mild overstatement, Kestrel! I mean, "What an impressive creature he was."? For Darquesse, that's drooling over his awesomeness. :D

I find it fascinating how this bbc film classification website thingy will only write fuck as f***, but they're fine with writing bitch . . . You'd've thought they'd, like, put b*tch or something.

Valice said...

Hi Star!
Well, people are strange...And some of this TV-people are more than just strange..

Kribu said...

Valice - I don't think I've met you before. Hi. :D

Ieni - do come back! I think the main issue some people have on the forums is that they fear bloglanders might try to turn the forums into a real-time chat venue, too, which is best kept in places that are better suited for that sort of thing.

Otherwise, well, there are several of us forum people who stalk the blog too, so... I feel more at home at the forums than here, but that's largely because I think it's a better platform for longer on-topic discussions and because work doesn't really allow me to hang around in more real-time chat places that well.

I understand if you felt put off but believe me, we don't all think that way!

Star Inkbright said...

I feel so innocent. I don't know what word the website is talking about when they say c***.

Kribu said...

Star - innocence can be a good thing. :D

Star Inkbright said...

And amazingly, the website has no problem with saying shit either. O_O

Valice said...

Thanks Kribu! :)

Kribu said...

Star - I was innocent. Once. I think.

Valice - you're welcome!

Rim. said...

Star, you used to be as innocent as you can get. I think we corrupted you ;)

Star Inkbright said...

Whne you were two minutes old, you were most likely innocent. *nods*

If you weren't, then I'm sure you were innocent aqt two seconds. Or at least two microseconds.

Kribu said...

See - we've all been innocent once.

Don't worry; it's a condition that will go away with age.

Star Inkbright said...

I still don't swear, you know. And before you ask, saying swear words so you can discus a website's use of tthem doesn't count as swearing. :)

I think.

If it does then I swear. *shrugs*

Rim. said...

Ive not been innocent for a LOOOOOONG time.

Kribu said...

Rim - I haven't either. Alas.

Star - nothing wrong with not swearing. I don't swear at all in real life and on the internets, when I do (rarely), I only do it in English. Somehow swearing in a foreign language doesn't have nearly the same effect as doing it in my mother tongue would.

Ieni Strider (Ieni The Ninja Aeroplane, Eater of Fabi's armses) said...

Um, Star, would the phrase 'See you next Tuesday?' help you to work it out...?

Oh, okay, thanks Kribu :)

Haha, I remember being innocent. I was convinced that people had children by snogging, but then didn't understand why film actors didn't get pregnant, when they snogged...

Star Inkbright said...

The c*** word that I don't know is annoying me because I don't know it. *frowns*

Seeing as I'm on the subject - I don't really GET swear words. What makes one word worse than another? Only people's opinion of that word and the way in which the word is used. All words are marks or sounds. We've just developed that THIS sound/mark means THIS and THAT sound/mark means THAT. Swear words are therefore just other sounds/marks. What makes them bad is people's opinions of them. So the 'swear' in 'swear words' means, like, opinions or connotations. In that case, people can swear using whatever words they like. Bubble can become a swear word for somebody if they think of i as a swear word. So why are these words, the ones like sh*t and f*uck and Mystery Word Beginning WIth C, so bad? Because there are a large number of people who use that as a swear word. And why do they? Because they are taught to.

So why are swear words swear words? Because we're told they are.

In effect, that's why all words are what they are.

I'm not sure what my point is with this . . .

I think my point is, it's not swear words that are bad, but they're just sounds/marks. It's the way in which people use them which makes them bad.

Valice said...

got to go, bye! :)

Rim. said...

You don't know the C word?!
It's basically a negative term for a black person.

Rim. said...

Bye VALICE!!!!!

Ieni Strider (Ieni The Ninja Aeroplane, Eater of Fabi's armses) said...

Omg, Star! That is EXACTLY what I' ve always though! And I felt sorry for the letters in swear words :/
That is also what I used to think!
And why can't we use them in public like at school, when everyone, including teachers use them anyway :/

Give me your email and I'll inbox you what it is...?:)

Kribu said...

Star - I agree. It's just that certain words develop certain connotations and in most cultures, words associated with certain body parts or acts tend to be taboo due to that. (Or words with religious associations in some religions.)

It's an interesting mechanism, the evolution of swear words. Perhaps there's a deep-seated human need to have some taboo words? That way, you have some really powerful words to use when you need it. Except that by now most of them have lost that power, what with being used lightly and as part of everyday speech by a lot of people, so...

Yeah. Something like that.

Star Inkbright said...

starinkbright@gmail.com

But see, my point is, if I hadn't seen c*** on the website I would never have known that c*** was *quotes* 'very strong language' and worse than f*ck. THIS PROVES MY POINT.

Rim. said...

It's scientifically proven that swearing loudly reduces pain by 5-15%
And it can also stop anger a small bit.

Kribu said...

... and now I wonder if we're thinking of different C-words, because the one I'm thinking of does not, as far as I know, have any specific uses as a racial slur. (Not saying it might not get used as that, too, but it's pretty race-independent from what I've seen.)

I think there are some more nicknames, but I can't remember them. c:

If you can think of another nickname, feel free to use that! ^^

I don't NEED more books, but I want more. I'm on...48 SP books. Getting at least one more for Xmas, possibly completing my collection by February. A complete collection of SP books within a year sounds pretty good, to me. XD

I keep thinking about the US editions... maybe the first one as a hardback, at some point.

Google hates me. *sighs*

I suppose google is allied with email, coz of gmail. That makes sense, 'specially as I have gmail.

Kribu said...

That's definitely a lot of books. :D

I've seen a few of the large paperbacks in shops (PWF and TFO when I was in Helsinki in the summer, DB - to my great surprise - here in Tallinn) and... well, I was tempted, absolutely.

But I'm just way too short on shelf space (and wall space for new shelves) at home to fill all the remaining space with more copies of books I already own in three versions. :-/

Star Inkbright said...

In a dream world, I would have 16 SP books. Both Aussie and UK TEOTWs, and all the other books in both UK paperback and UK hardback.

Luciana said...

I plan on buying SP in French and Spanish, soon, too. c:

SO I CAN GET MY SPANISH & FRENCH UP TO SCRATCH;D

and because they're so pretty.

I want to read HG in Spanish or French, actually. Or both... c:

ME AND MY AMAZING OBSESSIONS;D

Hey guys!

Star Inkbright said...

I'd like to read SP in French and German actually. :)

Kribu said...

I'd love the Aussie TEOTW paperback. I have it as an ebook, so at least there's that.

But yeah. I think I'll possibly get the US hardback of the first one at some point, but other than that, I'll stick to UK hardbacks + UK new cover numbered paperbacks + ebooks (for the actual reading).

It's hard enough to decide what to take with me if I ever do get to go to a signing. Can't exactly take them all, not with plane travel.

Star Inkbright said...

My TEOTW cover is kinda destroyed . . . D:

Kribu said...

Hi Magpie! Or Persephone. Or... whatever you prefer. :D

I'd really want some more of the other language editions, too. Having the Finnish one is kind of cool, at least.

Luciana said...

I've never been to a signing either, Kribu. :( BUT IT'S EVEN MORE ANNOYING BECAUSE I ACTUALLY LIVE IN ENGLAND RIGHT NEXT TO SHEFFIELD WHERE HE HAD A SIGNING THE OTHER YEAR THAT I COULDN'T GO TO BECAUSE OF MY STUPID BROTHER. :)

I NEED THE AUSSIE EDITIONS OF THE BOOKS. PREFERRABLY THE NEW ONES. BECAUSE THEY HAVE SHORT STORIES WE DON'T HAVE. :(

OH YEAH! GGG! I need to remind everyone about it...!

Luciana said...

Hello, Sevvvvvvvvv! :D

"Begin rescearching film classification across the most recent films that have caused moral panics - such as films with a certification of 12 that you can watch but some people might think are too violent, such as The Dark Knight.

What can you find out about The Dark Knight?"

Unknown said...

I know that it's a good movie. That's pretty much it.

Star Inkbright said...

I know. Grr. I can google 'recent films moral panic' all I like but I get nuffin'.
