Short Stories

Hello, my Minions.

Can you feel it? Can you? The 1st of September is approaching. According to that wonderful Countdown Clock on the Skulduggery website, there is- at the time of posting- FIVE days, TEN hours, and FOUR minutes. Of course, by the time you read this, the time to wait will be even shorter- and growing shorter every moment.

(Unless you’re re-reading this at some stage AFTER the 1st, in which case, yayyy it’s already out! Woot!)

Ahem.

All of you folks who came to the Edinburgh event have been fantastic, I have to say. I wasn’t OVERLY worried that someone would release spoilers, but the chance for someone to say the wrong thing or give the wrong hint (coughSwindlercough) was always there, lurking around the edges of every Blog and Facebook comment. So, my thanks to you, my Minions, for remaining loyal and true, and allowing your fellow readers the same chance you had to experience Death Bringer without ANY spoilers.

I have seven days until my tour begins, so I’m trying to cram as many things into this coming week as possible. I enjoy every tour when I’m out there, and it’s a great chance for me to meet the people from this Blog and the Facebook page and the Forums, so that always makes me smile. The downside of touring is the travelling, the hotels, the airports, the car rides, and the fact that you have to put your life on hold for a few weeks.

It’s like a holiday, without the relaxation or the parties.

But hey, it’s fun nonetheless.

This coming Wednesday is the official Skulduggery launch, in Eason’s Bookshop in Dublin. I have no idea what to expect. Most book launches are relatively quiet affairs, attended by friends and family, with a few other writers turning up to wish you well. When I was told that Dave from Eason was planning a launch, however, I got a chill. Because Dave... Dave doesn’t DO quiet.

The only thing I know about it is that there will be readers there, whom I BELIEVE have already entered a competition (I sincerely don’t know anything about it).  Apparently, he’s also planned a “surprise”. Oh dear God. I’ll keep you informed as best I can.

Now then, when we brought out the new paperback editions, I didn’t want you guys to buy a SECOND copy of a book you already owned just because they had (admittedly awesome) new covers. I knew there were some lunatics out there who would buy the new editions just for Tom’s artwork, so I wrote a few short stories just to give them something extra. Of course, THEN the problem became how to make those stories available to the people who DIDN’T feel the need to have multiple copies of the same book. You know- relatively SANE people.

So now, at last, two of the short stories that have previously appeared in the new paperbacks are now available on the website at skulduggerypleasant.co.uk, as well as being available on iBooks and Kindle, for the very reasonable price of NOTHING AT ALL. I love when things are free, because it means EVERYONE can afford it, and you don’t have to worry about loose change in your pocket. The Lost Art of World Domination takes place after Skulduggery Pleasant, and Gold, Babies and the Brothers Muldoon takes place after Playing With Fire. The other short stories will be released over the next few months.

And I’m going to go now, because I have things to do. Things! To do!

Ahem.

Master Derek, on the S.P. website the bit about the blog has gone wierd, at least for me. It says:
Normal.dotm 0 0 1 481 2746 22 5 3372 12.0 0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false /* Style Definitions */ which is quite odd!

I went to the museum today...Yep...

The entire time I couldn't help but think about who made some of those statues/pottery/stuff, and why some of them didn't have the common decency to clothe their people. I have half the mind to bring a bunch of clothes with me the next time I go, and put them on the naked statues...Their were a lot. The museum staff might get very confused if I do though...

...I also saw what I named a bear sloth...And no trip to the museum is complete without hitting something with the car. (Dad backed up into the wall this time. Last time another car crashed into ours.) Yay museums.

Oh! There was a listening station where you could hear about...what's-her-names voyage...and I decided to listen to it in French. That was interesting, seeing as I only understood half of what was being said...

--::*Zombie Plans*::--

Mary Hiashi said...

Derek was in a new cell on the other side of the Hobgobs layer. It had an open roof, lush green grass, and admittedly wasn't all that 'cell-like'; but Derek didn't care. He wanted to go back home to pet his cats and play with his dogs. He also really wanted a bowl of ice cream.

And then, out of nowhere, a large group from Dereksville Blogland appeared. Poor Derek was so afraid of yet another singing and dancing session, that he curled up into the fetal position, covered his ears, and hid his eyes. "No, no, no, no, no! I will not, I refuse!"
Mary Hiashi stepped forth. "Derek, are you okay?"
Derek looked up slowly. "Umm...Yep...I...I'm good."
Kallista then made herself known. "Well that's good to hear Derek! But we actually came to ask you what you're zombie plan is. It's really very important to us."

"My...My zombie plan? I mean yes, I do have one, but...Why do you want to know it?"
"I don't know, just curious I guess." Said Octaboona who was for some reason trying to hide behind a very confused squirrel.
"And I mean, if you won't tell us, we could always beat it out of ya!" Added Florence.
"I...I'll tell you. No need for violence now."
"Tell us then."
"Fine. Just, don't laugh at me please. My plan is...that...In my house, I have an escape route. The route leads to a box of Trix, inside of a garbage bin, inside a panic room, inside a panic room, inside yet another panic room. So if a zombie outbreak were to occur, I'd simply run as fast as possible to the Trix and close and lock the panic room doors as I went along. Then I'd hide in the garbage bin and ration the Trix until the problem gets solved."
"That isn't a sufficient food source. And what about water?" Asked Alex.
"What?! Of course the Trix is sufficient! And there is a spring...Or a pond...Anyway I'll have that."
"Isn't that a little unsanitary?"
"No, not at all. I think that there's a filter in there somewhere."
"Okay...Another thing. You're not exactly at your house right now. What if a zombie outbreak were to occur at this very moment."

"Ah, you see, this is where my Awesome Plan of Zombie Outbreak Fallback Failsafe comes into play. It's also known as APZ OFF. I prepared for this plan by learning martial arts and playing many zombie games. In turn I learned my defense and my offense options. In this case, I'd fight my way home, whereupon I could continue with my original plan."
"And does that plan have a name too?"
"Yes, it is called the F U N K Y T O W N plan. And no, it isn't an acronym."
"What about your animals."
"They have a plan too, but I'm not going to tell you what it is."
"Right..."

Mary Hiashi said...

Mary stepped forward and motioned with her hand for the other's to follow. "We should go now," she began, "the Lunar Union is almost upon us."
Not knowing what this meant, Derek shrunk back into the corner and hid from view. Strobe lights appeared along with rave music, and all the people from Dereksville Blogland disappeared. Derek went back to rocking back and forth, wishing to go home, and craving a bowl of ice cream.

Mary Hiashi said...

Hey Kal!

The bear sloth was a monstrous...beastly type...sloth bear.

See. We could go to the museum. Confuse the staff. Then go to a restaurant...And confuse the staff.

YAAAAYYYY! I wish I had a Kindle. I wonder if the ebooks work without e-readers or something or whatever. I never had one, okay?! I don't know anything about them.

I'm conflicted. I mean, I'm going home this weekend, so I could use my mom's money =) to buy the book off amazon.co.uk, but they charge in euros...and I don't know how that works if we're paying in dollars. And I don't think I could order and receive the book all in one weekend, especially Labor Day weekend. And more than any of that, I don't know if I can handle having a new Skulduggery book right now. I have so much schoolwork to do, and Skulduggery eats my brain. To do everything I need to do, I'd have to limit the time I spent on it, which, as we all know, is...well, HARD. Maybe I'll just put off getting it until next summer when I have time to enjoy it, but then I'll be behind on everything Skulduggery related. *Sob* I'll figure something out. =)

And yes! September is practically here! I'd be a bit unhappy about summer being over, but if September brings awesome stuff - such as a new SP book - with it, then I'm all for September.

Quinnera Elviana: 5th Seat of the Council of the Lost Ones said...

@Kribu: Hi there!

I hate you. *glares*

Well, not really. But still.

Grrr....

I know! I'm just not sure how I'm going to get the next book, because I want it as a paperback (that's how I have the rest of them) so it looks like I'll have to borrow it from someone.

Kribu said...

@Quinn - hello!

I'm getting the hardcover (because they look so awesome in my shelf) and the ebook (to be read right away, as it'll take the physical book some time to get shipped all the way here). So I'm well set. *g* (But the paperbacks do look nice, too...)

Pottermore's cool, although after the first evening and going through everything (wand! sorting!), there's not a lot to keep doing there for now. Maybe there'll be more once it's out of beta.

Quinnera Elviana: 5th Seat of the Council of the Lost Ones said...

Hmm... There's an idea. Maybe I'll get the ebook to read for now...

Just have to convince my parents. Or I'll pay out of my own money.

Oooh! What house are you in? And what's your wand? Apparently they'll be opening up wizard duelling later (this is just what I've heard and you can upload fanart and stuff. But yeah, that's about it. They'll add the next book in 2012, hopefully... :D

Quinnera Elviana: 5th Seat of the Council of the Lost Ones said...

I've gotta be off now...

Bye Kribu! Nice to meet you!

If you're on a computer and want to chat to some blogland folk:

http://xat.com/AquilaFelis

Go there. It's the chatbox where a bunch of us hang out.

Kribu said...

Argh, missed you! Have to do work so can only take a 30 second break now and then - so chatting doesn't work that well. But I'll try and remember it, maybe some evening!

Slytherin, though - didn't expect that, I must say (I've always been Ravenclaw everywhere else). But I guess there's that sliver of darkness even in the best of us... and well, I rather adore Snape, so I don't mind too much. (If I'd been Hufflepuff, though... oh dear, I could just see my friends pointing and laughing at me.) And an elder wand, with dragon core, I think.

I'm looking forward to the duelling - you can only practice the spells for now.

Quinnera Elviana: 5th Seat of the Council of the Lost Ones said...

I'm back!

Well, Kribu, if you see this:

Slytherin, eh? That'd be my second choice for house. I've always considered myself a Ravenclaw, though. I hope I'm a Ravenclaw... Hufflepuff? Hmm. I don't think it'd be too bad. We've got to remember that in Hufflepuff you'd be in the footsteps of the likes of Cedric Diggory and Nymphadora Tonks. So I wouldn't mind it that much... Slytherin and Gryffindor are ok, again. I'd prefer Ravenclaw most of all. Dragon core. Nice :)

Yeah- the duelling sounds awesome. I think they'll release it later in the beta, apparently they're still having issues with potions.

Kribu said...

*waves*

Potions is glitched, yes. I managed to make one and then lost a whole lot of ingredients just because things didn't work well at all, so I'm not going to try more for now. I think it might be okay when there's not a lot of people on at once, but of course that's something they'll have to fix by October.

The sorting is odd - two of my usually Ravenclaw friends ended up in Slytherin with me and another in Gryffindor, while a usually Gryffindor friend is in Hufflepuff. I think it's a bit random, really!

Quinnera Elviana: 5th Seat of the Council of the Lost Ones said...

*waves back*

Wow. (About the houses) That's weird...

I have a theory that they're just trying to spread it out amongst the houses. Because most of the people I know think that they're in Ravenclaw. So they're just putting people in random ones :P

The potion making just sounds weird... Apparently you have to leave it for a while and come back at the correct time and stuff... weird... Yeah. I've been fulfilling my desperation for Pottermore by googling it and reading reviews and stuff.

I should've registered myself as Indian. Maybe they'd have put me in earlier... For diversity and stuff. (I'm British, but ethnically Indian.)

So yeah :P

Kribu said...

I think you're probably right about them wanting to spread out the people in the houses, to ensure the houses get about an equal number of people. Some of the sorting questions were definitely unusual (I think it was things like "Left or right?" or "Moon or stars?", so ... random element right there!) - I don't think you're meant to be able to influence it much, anyway.

Also, a British friend of mine just got her e-mail yesterday, so there's hope for you!

And yes, the potion making is like that. I don't mind that bit - it makes it a bit more realistic - but it's the adding of ingredients and stirring that seems glitched. Can't always pick them up properly and all.

Quinnera Elviana: 5th Seat of the Council of the Lost Ones said...

Hmm... Well. I'm still hoping for Ravenclaw, but I'll be happy enough anywhere. SO LONG AS I GET IN! *is annoyed*

They sent out emails yesterday? *goes to refresh* Nope. Nothing.

Hmm. Well, I suppose it's more realistic. But they should fix out all the bugs soon. That's what the beta is for, I suppose.

Kribu said...

It might also depend on when you registered ... I got in the first day; I don't think any of my friends who got in later in the week (when the magical quill thingy was held) have got their actual beta access e-mails yet. But then again I had to wait quite a bit longer than some other people, to get that beta invitation.

I think it really is to fix the bugs, yes - seeing how their servers will cope and all that. And I hope they'll add some stuff, too, by October, as some of the chapters are a little lacking on the interactive front for now.

Quinnera Elviana: 5th Seat of the Council of the Lost Ones said...

I registered on day 3, but people who registered on day 7 have gotten in. So.... Just waiting, I guess.

Yeah- though so far it sounds awesome.

Hmm: Random question... What's your second favourite snack food?

Kribu said...

Second favourite? I don't even know what my most favourite is! Um ... maybe bilberries. Because I'm eating them right now, but I'm sure there is something else I'd love even more, if I could just think of it.

What's yours?

Poor Kiiyashi! You do know you can read them online, though? On the SP website. Just go onto the pages for the first and second books and there's a link to download the stories in glorious PDF! YAY!

Cheese twists sound good! I like all sorts of baked things and cheese things and... but I'm trying to keep my snacks healthier for now. Which isn't a problem, fortunately, as I do like berries and fruit and fresh/raw veggies, too.

I think it IS on the website where the bandwidth is exceeded - I just checked and got that for the second book's short story. I'm glad I downloaded them first thing!

Hullo Derek!

I've decided to have a rant. Mostly because I haven't done one of those in a while, and I miss it, and because my local bookshop does give a damn about publishing dates, I own a copy of the Death Bringer.

Also, school started, and fifth year sucks so far, but the book is great and that's the only spoiler anyone's getting, except maybe that he picked one of the names i had on me blog where I collected a very large list of names that other people suggested and added some of my own.

(Also, I think it's widely assumed that the book is great, so that might not be a spoiler at all)

Okay, maybe two names, but I think, that is most likely coincidence, and I don't really know about the second actually being on the list. Come to think of it, I'm not sure of the first either. I mean 699 is a big number and I don't know who suggested Edward, but I also suggest a boy's name and am coveting Wednesday for my own daughter (who is yet to be conceived, but whatever), so I can't talk. Wednesday just sounds great. I love the way it sounds in my mouth.

Also, I decided I'd like to be Clarabelle... it's highly unlikely, but I'd really like it. It'd honestly would take like seven things of my to-do list. Such as, Be in a film, and Wear a gas-mask, and other things, (like be something that so evil it has no redeeming features)

Also, I don't care if no one agree, I still think Helena Bonham-Carter would be a fabulous China.

And Ghastly is very, very difficult to draw.

Sla(fahda)n!

Hi anyone who's here...

Quinnera Elviana: 5th Seat of the Council of the Lost Ones said...

HI THALIA!

Min (Thalia) said...

Hi Quinn!

*hugs*

How're you?

Quinnera Elviana: 5th Seat of the Council of the Lost Ones said...

I'm good thanks, Thalia! *hugs*

You?

Min (Thalia) said...

I'm good I guess~. Thanks for asking!

Quinnera Elviana: 5th Seat of the Council of the Lost Ones said...

YAY!

It's crazy on the chat...

I'm not sure you even want to know.

Min (Thalia) said...

Errrr......

Are there just lots of people? Or is there another fight?

Octa said...

Hey Thalia.

Nothing like that. Although there are a lot of people as it happens.

Quinnera Elviana: 5th Seat of the Council of the Lost Ones said...

Not a fight...

Well...

Long story.

I have a habit of putting on a fake moustache and pretending to be a guy (named Quentin) on here.

And I did this, so that Octa wouldn't be the only guy on.

Then the others decided to dress him up as a girl.

And then we ended up dancing together...

IT WAS MADNESS

And you can get the rest of the story from one of the others!

Octa said...

And well... we ended up kissing...

yes...

Min (Thalia) said...

LOL you two. Hey, sorry if I'm slow. Math homework can be a pain.

Min (Thalia) said...

Oh, and hi Octa!

*hugs*

How're you?

Octa said...

Oh I know Maths homework can be dreadful.

I've had so much over the summer.

Quinnera Elviana: 5th Seat of the Council of the Lost Ones said...

I had two hours! And it's all over! :D

*hopes Thalia's maths homework is over quickly*

Octa said...

I'm good Thalia

And you?

Min (Thalia) said...

I'm pretty good, Octa. Thanks for asking.

It's not that much math. Just review from last year. But my mind is still in French mode, so it keeps spouting random little French words at me when I try to find the answer.

Quinnera Elviana: 5th Seat of the Council of the Lost Ones said...

LOL Thalia. I garble random French all the time.

It makes people think I'm weird.

I would have no idea why.

Min (Thalia) said...

LOL Quinn.

Today was only my third day of French class, so I don't know much. I took a French and Spanish sampler class last year, but it was only around three weeks for French, and it was at the beginning of the year, so I've forgotten everything from then~

Octa said...

I forgot all of my French.

I learnt it for 3 years. 2 years later it's all vanished. POOF!

*blows the dust of my French knowledge into the wind*

Quinnera Elviana: 5th Seat of the Council of the Lost Ones said...

LOL Octa.

I've done French for 6 years now. Hard to forget. We did a sampler of Spanish and German 2 years ago. Then we chose between them. I chose German, regretted it soon later. So I've dropped German this year- my only modern language left being French :D

*watches Octa's French knowledge fly away*

Min (Thalia) said...

*sneezes repeatedly as the wind blows the French-dust in my direction*

*frowns and rubs nose*

Meeehhh, allergies.

Min (Thalia) said...

For now, in my school, we get to choose either French or Spanish. Last year Chinese was also an option, but they moved that for some ridiculous reasons. In two years, though, I can choose either to either keep going with French, or start Spanish, Chinese, or Latin.

Min (Thalia) said...

*choose to either

Typos :(

Quinnera Elviana: 5th Seat of the Council of the Lost Ones said...

Oooh! That's cool. I did Latin for 3 years as well, which I've dropped. I'm starting Ancient Greek instead.

Latin is... Ok. Good. But I don't like learning a dead language. Really not my thing. :P

Min (Thalia) said...

Ancient Greek sounds fun.

I want to take Latin, but I'm not sure if my mum with let me. Spanish isn't high on my language list. So depending on how I like French, I'll either keep at that or go into Chinese, which was my original choice before they moved it.

Quinnera Elviana: 5th Seat of the Council of the Lost Ones said...

Meh- Ancient Greek is hard work. I've just finished the alphabet. Thoroughly.

Latin is good, and if you learn everything well, then it's very easy. But I prefer French loads more. Chinese sounds very difficult. I don't know if I'd be able to do it. But this is you, not me :P

Min (Thalia) said...

Hi Kallista!

*hugs*

How're you? :D

Quinnera Elviana: 5th Seat of the Council of the Lost Ones said...

Hi Kallista! *hugs*

Min (Thalia) said...

I'll probably just stick with French. I'm lazy, even if Chinese sounds fun.

Quinnera Elviana: 5th Seat of the Council of the Lost Ones said...

LOL :) Same here.

Too lazy to give up on 6 years of learning a language. :P

Octa said...

Mar-Chu said...

now I need to get in touch again with Mir...because I REALLY want to post the first part today.

Mar-Chu said...

Really? Huh.

Well, counting both floors on the basement steps, that has 13 steps.

Min (Thalia) said...

Mar - try calling Mir. Might be more effective than email.

Mar-Chu said...

...aaaaah...

but wait! She has dance practice today. She told me in orchestra she has some dance recital.

Aerliss said...

Just finished Death Bringer. Without giving ANYTHING away; Chapter 61 was my favourite. I've been waiting for that chapter for soooo long! Thank you Mr Landy, thank you so very much.

Min (Thalia) said...

Oh. Yeah, I think her dance practice goes on for a long time. Hmm....

Mar-Chu said...

So far I have a few made characters, me, and you, Thalia. Maybe Mir, and I'll just insert her into the next part, because nothing really happens in part one.

There's already a Seer, a Metalurge, and Polymath, a Dreameater, and I'm planning for a mindcaster to come in later.

Mar-Chu said...

Bye Octa!
