Short Stories

Hello, my Minions.

Can you feel it? Can you? The 1st of September is approaching. According to that wonderful Countdown Clock on the Skulduggery website, there is- at the time of posting- FIVE days, TEN hours, and FOUR minutes. Of course, by the time you read this, the time to wait will be even shorter- and growing shorter every moment.

(Unless you’re re-reading this at some stage AFTER the 1st, in which case, yayyy it’s already out! Woot!)

Ahem.

All of you folks who came to the Edinburgh event have been fantastic, I have to say. I wasn’t OVERLY worried that someone would release spoilers, but the chance for someone to say the wrong thing or give the wrong hint (coughSwindlercough) was always there, lurking around the edges of every Blog and Facebook comment. So, my thanks to you, my Minions, for remaining loyal and true, and allowing your fellow readers the same chance you had to experience Death Bringer without ANY spoilers.

I have seven days until my tour begins, so I’m trying to cram as many things into this coming week as possible. I enjoy every tour when I’m out there, and it’s a great chance for me to meet the people from this Blog and the Facebook page and the Forums, so that always makes me smile. The downside of touring is the travelling, the hotels, the airports, the car rides, and the fact that you have to put your life on hold for a few weeks.

It’s like a holiday, without the relaxation or the parties.

But hey, it’s fun nonetheless.

This coming Wednesday is the official Skulduggery launch, in Eason’s Bookshop in Dublin. I have no idea what to expect. Most book launches are relatively quiet affairs, attended by friends and family, with a few other writers turning up to wish you well. When I was told that Dave from Eason was planning a launch, however, I got a chill. Because Dave... Dave doesn’t DO quiet.

The only thing I know about it is that there will be readers there, whom I BELIEVE have already entered a competition (I sincerely don’t know anything about it).  Apparently, he’s also planned a “surprise”. Oh dear God. I’ll keep you informed as best I can.

Now then, when we brought out the new paperback editions, I didn’t want you guys to buy a SECOND copy of a book you already owned just because they had (admittedly awesome) new covers. I knew there were some lunatics out there who would buy the new editions just for Tom’s artwork, so I wrote a few short stories just to give them something extra. Of course, THEN the problem became how to make those stories available to the people who DIDN’T feel the need to have multiple copies of the same book. You know- relatively SANE people.

So now, at last, two of the short stories that have previously appeared in the new paperbacks are now available on the website at skulduggerypleasant.co.uk, as well as being available on iBooks and Kindle, for the very reasonable price of NOTHING AT ALL. I love when things are free, because it means EVERYONE can afford it, and you don’t have to worry about loose change in your pocket. The Lost Art of World Domination takes place after Skulduggery Pleasant, and Gold, Babies and the Brothers Muldoon takes place after Playing With Fire. The other short stories will be released over the next few months.

And I’m going to go now, because I have things to do. Things! To do!

Ahem.

That is just ten cents of depressing. Death Bringer comes out on October 26 for us poor Canadians. It might get all snowy-like by the time it comes out, what, with the weird weather we've been having.

Like seriously! We had that crazy long, crazy snowy, and crazy cold winter last year. We've had freak thunder/rain storms...And what in the bloody hazes is up with the tornados and tornato warnings? We're not really supposed to have those!

Oh, dear. The world really is ending! ;)

On the upside, it seems that my word (Awesomesauce. Or formally known as 'awesomesauce incarnate.) has at least, partially caught on.

For those who don't know, it's a sort of new take on "sauteed in wrong sauce" from the Rock Star show...I think it was for INXS...

On the downside however, Mother is making me be in charge of her company's blog. Which means I have to write about whatever she tells me to, and I have to sound professional and...bubbly. God I hate bubbly. And then I have to go and put my real name on there. Even brother agrees that that isn't right. He said, and I quote "She shouldn't put her name on there. It doesn't sound like her.". To which Mother replied, "What do you mean it doesn't sound like her? It sounds just fine." And the response, "*Sigh* This sounds all...bubbly...and Mary isn't bubbly."

Mother then walked away, and brother shook his head. And note that I the only not correctly quoted thing is my name, but I'm not putting my real one in there. It was also weird that he used my name. We don't use each others names. I call him brother, and he calls me sister. Simple, effective, and not easily forgotten.

...*Sighs* I'm a complainer, apparantly.

I also REALLY want to read Death Bringer.

Blessed be,
Miss Mary Hiashi

P.S. DFTBA

HI GUYS! WHO'S HERE?!

Mary Hiashi said...

...Wait...Tornato?

...Is that supposed to be some sort of tornado made out of tomatos...

Does it come with a gift basket and a straw?

No?

...Darn...

Ooh! If any of you have the time, and like Star Wars, listen to "Vader, Did You Know?" by Vic Mignogna. It's like Mary Did You Know (a Christmas song) but Star Wars-y.

...

Hmm...

Just wondering... do you know about the chat?

Mary Hiashi said...

Yep, I do. I just don't go there. Not enough hours in the day I fear...

Blood Butterflies said...

...? MARY! WHERE DO YOU LIVE?

*grins*

Aquila Felis said...

No prob Mary. ^^
It's just easier to talk there.
Then again, that and the fact it's quite fast sometimes is a disadvantage.
*shrugs*

Mary Hiashi said...

Canada. That's all you're gettin'.

Blood Butterflies said...

I have to go now. BYEEEEEEEEE.

Mary Hiashi said...

I didn't realize that it was that late.

Aquila Felis said...

I just wondered, since it's morning to me, it's probably middle of the night for you. ^^

Guess you should go and get some sleep, huh?
*gives pillow to her*

Ayla O' Reardon said...

Gah, sleeping for only two hours does nobody any good
Aquila!!!!
Are you still blogging?
Like right now?

Mary Hiashi said...

Darnit all Jimmy. It's 4 in the morning. Pfft...Like I don't go to bed till 5 or 6 anyways.

It's partially why dad calls me a vampire (or Dracula)... Admittedly it's an odd nickname for your daughter, but who said I was normal?

Ayla O' Reardon said...

Yayy people!!!
People who blog early!!!!

Mary Hiashi said...

...Or that dad was normal for that matter?

Aquila Felis said...

Hi Dess!

Well, don't blame me for you being tired, then. I tried. (Although admittedly not really convincing... ^^)

Aquila Felis said...

Mary, none of us is normal.
You norm things, not beings.
Actually the EU was laughed about when they normed how straight a cucumber was meant to be.
...
And Germany seems to be the only country who trys to keep all those crazy norms. -.-

Anyway, nobody's normal. =P
^^

Ayla O' Reardon said...

Aquila i didnt know you blogged this early :D

Aquila Felis said...

To me it's nearly 9:40am.

Most of the time that means I'm at school.
But today is not only a sunday, but we also have summer holidays. ^^

Mary Hiashi said...

Speaking of Germany, I just played a Nancy Drew game set there. The accents in the game sucked for the most part...but it was alright.

Hee-hee...And the guys were wearing lederhosen. The Burgermeister hated it though... His board game sucked let me tell you...Stupid, stupid Raid!

Mary Hiashi said...

I don't want to go back to school...*Sighs*

I think it starts next week...Or is it the week after? I don't rightfully know...

Aquila Felis said...

... actually, nobody's wearing Lederhosen, xept they go to the Oktoberfest...
... not even Bavarians wear them, usually...
Meh. Whatever. ^^

Aquila Felis said...

I have two weeks of holidays left.
And quite an amount of homework.
-.-

Mary Hiashi said...

...You have homework??

And I know that no one wears lederhosen...It was just an odd castle where they were forced to wear them.

Aquila Felis said...

Poor ones...

And yes, I have homework. Lots.
I'll finish school with that next year. I COULD go to university, then. If I wanted to. Especially now, when going to university will be for free again.
But at the moment I tend to prefer finding work over studyin. Mainly because I have no clue what I want to become.

Ayla O' Reardon said...

The pair of you are really lucky, bask in the glory of summer holidays for a while longer, I
cant though because I started last week.

Gah.

We got homework on the FIRST DAY i mean really was its nessicary to give us homework on the first day were they really that eager to give us homework.

Yes they were.

:(

Mary Hiashi said...

I hear ya.

If University is free though, taxes must be high...

Although it'd be nice to go for free...

But comparing the cost of University here to the U.S. I prefer here.

Aquila Felis said...

Hi Lily!

... and I'm good with languages.
But to become a studied translator you need more than two languages.
My only ones are German and English.

... I'm also good with sciences.
But I don't want to become an engineer.

... I love children.
But I no longer want to become a teacher. And those working at kindergarten hardly earn enough money to live.

Actually, I'm probably qualificated to become everything I want to. Which doesn't exactly narrow my choices down.

Mary Hiashi said...

I miss kindergarten. You got to play all day, and go to sleep about half way through it. Ah, those were the days...

Aquila Felis said...

Mary, actually, people say our taxes would be high. But then again wages are high, too. *shrugs*
Plus our social system will make sure you always have enough money to live. Wether you are working or not. If you have work, half of your health insurance is payed by your employer, and you always have an insurance if you have work.

Actually, yes, our taxes may be high, but I don't really want to live anywhere else. =P
^^

- said...

ohhhhhh. :P haha, my languages: english and chinese. i know a little spanish. X)) german...hmm...i know GUT means good and "wies get ihnen?" :P btw, HIIIII

- said...

i live in Australia :D

Mary Hiashi said...

The school system here kind of sucks though...And they cancelled some of my classes because there 'weren't enough people'. Gah!

Aquila Felis said...

Australia, country with most different poisonous animals. ^^

I don't know much about Australia.
*shrugs*
^^

Mary Hiashi said...

Crazy as it sounds, I don't want to live anywhere but Canada.

I speak English. I also, speak enough French and Italian to quite possibly get by. (I'm better at reading it.)

Aquila Felis said...

A friend of mine spent a year in Canada. Sounds like a nice place. Though maybe a bit cold.
... and he said the walls of your houses were really thin. ^^
But that probably doesn't apply to all houses. ^^

Mary Hiashi said...

Australia sounds like its too damn hot for me. (It's 20 degrees celsius in this room and I'm close to sweating.) And I can't stand the sun. (Another reason why dad calls me a vampire.)

And Germany sounds crowded...There is also the language barrier. That is fixable, but...

Mary Hiashi said...

Where in Canada was he?

Aquila Felis said...

Parts are crowded (Especially the south and the west). Parts are nearly empty (Especially in eastern Germany).

... and I have to admit, our language is difficult to learn. Then again, some universities teach in English, and in some companies you speak English. Yay for globalization, I guess. ^^

Aquila Felis said...

Somewhere around Quebec.

Mary Hiashi said...

And how thick SHOULD a wall be?

I don't think we have that thin of walls.

Aquila Felis said...

He said they were thin enough to probably break through if you'd run against them.
... for our walls you either need a huge and heavy hammer, or a car to break through.

Mary Hiashi said...

I've never been to Quebec...

Mary Hiashi said...

Well...I'm not going to run at the wall to test that out...But they won't break that easy.

Hmm...Quebec also doesn't like the rest of Canada. That's why the party Bloc Quebecois exists...

- said...

australia is actually pretty cold right now. it was FREEZING last month. X)) so it's not all warm weather for us :P

Aquila Felis said...

^^
I won't run against one of our walls either. For obvious reasons.
No clue how thick a wall should be... I'm fairly sure the walls to the outside of the house are at least 20cm, though.

Mary Hiashi said...

By freezing, what do you mean exactly? I might visit Australia then.

Aquila Felis said...

Lily, but do you have snow every winter? ^^

And I think Canada is colder than Europe or Australia.

- said...

haha, FREEZING as in much less than the mean temperature, which is im assuming around 19 degrees clecius or 20 degrees celcius :)

Mary Hiashi said...

The width of my walls are all...roughly 13cm...

Aquila Felis said...

... Lily, 20°C is not freezing. It's our usual room temperature.

At 0°C water freezes.
That'd be cold. ^^

And our temperatures tend to drop to under 0° in winter. ^^

- said...

my walls are letsee... around 17cm :)

Mary Hiashi said...

20 celcius. That is far from freezing. If you live in Canada, and after winter, you'll find 9 celsius to be warm.

Aquila Felis said...

... yup, 13cm seems kinda thin...
*shrugs*

Probably depends on what you're used to...
... but in a country with cold winters, thicker walls would keep the houses warmer...
Meh. Whatever. ^^

- said...

i know it isnt. but note i said "much less than the mean temperature, which is I'm assuming 19 degrees celcius or 20 degrees celcius"

- said...

:P so what time is it where you guys are?

Mary Hiashi said...

In winter, the normal temp drop is to around -30, but it often gets colder...And with the wind...even colder...

Mary Hiashi said...

It's almost 5am.

- said...

haha, gawd i would F-R-E-E-Z-E. but i used to live in new zealand when i was younger so...it used to SNOW. :DDD i miss snow :'(

Aquila Felis said...

To me it's 10:30am.

- said...

haha its 6:31pm in AUST EST :)

Ayla O' Reardon said...

9:30 for me

- said...

AM or PM?

Aquila Felis said...

... btw, what do am and pm stand for?
After midnight and past midday? 0o

Mary Hiashi said...

I'll tell you right now. I don't miss snow. Bloody long enough winter as it was.

...But I can't wait to wear my runners (converse of course), my scarf, and my coat again. (The coat is like Valkyrie's...except not custom made...and completely black...and made out of that one material...)

- said...

AM= morning (12AM-11AM is morning)
PM=night/evening/afternoon(12PM-11PM is night/evening/afternoon)

Ayla O' Reardon said...

am

Mary Hiashi said...

AM. Morning. PM. Night.

- said...

wow. all of youse are experiencing morning...im currently in evening :D

Aquila Felis said...

Lily, I know what they mean.
But there are two letters. So they probably stand for words.

- said...

ah. AM- anti-meridean (hope thats how you spell it
PM- post-meridean

Aquila Felis said...

I mean, there just has to be a reason it's those two letters, right?

Mary Hiashi said...

After midnight.

Past morning.

...Maybe...

I'm not sure...

Aquila Felis said...

... I thought the meridean would be that imaginary line...
Nevermind.

- said...

haha. okay, guys. ill be back. DINNER. :D

Hello folks!

Aquila Felis said...

Hi Quinn!

See you...perhaps...

Hey Aquila, what does Fraulein mean...I probably spelt that wrong...

Quinnera Elviana: 5th Seat of the Council of the Lost Ones said...

Hi Aquila!

Hi Mary!

Aquila Felis said...

Wikipedia says it's ante meridiem and post meridiem. ^^

*is glad the meridian was what she thought it'd be*

Mary Hiashi said...

Ni Hao.

Aquila Felis said...

Fräulein is like Miss. A word for an unmarried woman.
But nowadays it's hardly used. We just call everyone Frau, which was like Mrs. formerly used for married women, for all women, wether married or not. ^^

Quinnera Elviana: 5th Seat of the Council of the Lost Ones said...

Ni hao. *bows*

Mary Hiashi said...

Ohh...

Okay, thanks for clearing that up.

And that explains the other thing...

I was reading a book and I thought there were a lot of women named Frau...

Quinnera Elviana: 5th Seat of the Council of the Lost Ones said...

Brb

Mary Hiashi said...

Ya...That's as far as my chinese goes...

Aquila Felis said...

Mary, I love the idea of you thinking it's a name... ^^

Aquila Felis said...

Btw, Herr stands for Mr.
Just in case. ^^

Mary Hiashi said...

Damnit! I thought the same of Herr...Heaven help me.

Mary Hiashi said...

Flaming popsicles! That changes everything.

Mary Hiashi said...

Potato Walk Dreams!

Aquila Felis said...

Wow...
... you must've thought were really boring in choosing names...
... seeing as how every man and every woman had the same first names...

Let me tell you, we just have as many different names as everyone else. ^^

Mary Hiashi said...

I get first!
Yayeth I.

Aquila Felis said...

Congrats Mary! ^^
*gives her a cookie*

Mary Hiashi said...

I loves me the cookies.

And yes, I thought that there was a lot of lost creativity...

Aquila Felis said...

*giggles*
I'm still trying to imagine a country with only two first names... ^^

Mary Hiashi said...

Although I was confused. 'Cause it would say Herr Hubermann one minute and then Hans Hubermann the next...

Aquila Felis said...

Poor one. ^^

Aquila Felis said...

Well, now you know why. ^^

Ayla O' Reardon said...

Sorry I was doing things

Mary Hiashi said...

No, there were more names. Because then there was Max Vandenburg...And Liesel Meminger...And Rudy Steiner...And Rosa Hubermann...I just thought that there were a lot of similiar names going on. Like...I don't know...Muhammad is a popular name with some ethnic groups...

Mary Hiashi said...

Or William used to be popular way back when...

Aquila Felis said...

*still giggling*

Mary Hiashi said...

Poor me...

Aquila Felis said...

*manages to stop... barely*
Sorry, but that was just SO funny... ^^

Anyway, I guess it's good you asked... ^^
