Wow… yesterday was a long day.
It’s been a long week, actually. Aside from normal things like writing, I’m also busy with other stuff that nobody else is interested in but me- planning out a new kitchen, planning on having the floorboards put down in the living room... God, it’s all so domesticated. Isn’t the moment when you put in a new kitchen the moment you finally grow up and become an adult? It’s all so tediously dull and boring that there really is no other excuse for it.
Still, at least I have people like YOU to keep me young.
Right?
So, yesterday. Monday. I got up at five. It wasn’t that bad, getting up at five. I was brushing my teeth and it was just getting bright outside and I was thinking to myself, “This getting up at five lark, it’s really not so bad as I’d thought.” I was halfway down the stairs when I fell asleep. Not sure how I fed the dogs or the cats, but the next thing I knew I was in my car. Time sure flies when you’re sleeping.
My flight was at 6:50, and I got into Glasgow at a little before 8, where I was whisked off to the Harper Collins building and told to sign 2300 brand new copies of Death Bringer. I took a moment to look at the book- it was the first time I’d seen it- and make sure the dedication and the blurb was right. Oh it’s a nice book. Oh it’s a BIG book. 603 hardback pages, compared to Mortal Coil’s 572. AND the print is slightly smaller, so we’ve crammed more words onto each page, so in reality Death Bringer is... er... well, a lot more than 31 pages longer.
So I signed the books in record-breaking time- thanks to the six or seven people around me who unpacked the books, opened the books, slid them to me to sign, slid them away, stacked them, packed them up again, and hauled them back to the warehouse- all in one continuous motion. It’s quite something, seeing something like that. And they always ask me if I’m doing okay, if my arm is sore, if I need a break- but the fact is, I’m the only one sitting down, so I’m quite rested while they’re all running around frantically. Oh it’s good to be the writer.
Once that was done, Sam and I (Sam being my publicist extraordinaire) got in a car for the hour-long drive to Edinburgh. We got there at twelve, had lunch, strolled over to the Festival.
I love the Edinburgh Book Festival. It’s so PACKED full of things and events and writers and all these people, all of these people of different ages and backgrounds and styles who come here just because they love books. The staff are so cool, real chatty and approachable, and the whole thing has a wonderful air of friendliness to it.
We went into the Author’s Tent- which is a fabulous marquee of hidden delights and forbidden pleasures- where I met Skulduggery artist Mister Tom Percival, who was over to do his own event. Tom is, as you know, the writer/illustrator behind Tobias and the Super Spooky Ghost Book and the upcoming A Home for Mr Tipps (both amazing picture books for a little brother or sister, if you have them. Or, you know, even if you don't. They're still AWESOME).
I also met up with Charlie Fletcher, author of the Stoneheart trilogy. I’d been on stage with Charlie a few years ago, when the first Skulduggery books was released, so it was nice to catch up. We know some of the same people, and we were talking movie rights and options until we were pushed onstage, where Charlie introduced me to the five hundred or so people packed into the tent.
It was a good event. Every event at a festival tends to be a good event, but this was especially good. The hour passed before I knew it, and then I was signing. Most writers for young people are taken to the Children’s Signing Tent, apparently, but because of the massive amount of people that turned up, I was taken to the MAIN Signing Tent, and signed for three and a quarter hours. In that time, I was given pictures (thank you all!), a story (thank you Zoe!), and seven- yes, SEVEN- hugs. I also met a few people who either read or comment on (or both) this Blog- Mhairi, NJ Maverick, Sarthacus and... and... argh... Doggy Bone Girl Person... (fine, that is not her ACTUAL name, but it’s close... kind of...)
By the end, I had to seriously speed up, because I had a flight to catch, but I managed to see everyone, chat to everyone, and sign all their books. Some of these people were waiting for over three hours, for God’s sake- I couldn’t just LEAVE them there. (Besides, they looked dangerous.)
When I got to the airport, though, I was told my flight had been delayed for an hour and half, which meant I could have stayed and had a long chat with EVERYONE. Curses!
Ahem.
I got home at eleven. My dogs were still alive (the cats hadn’t eaten them). I was tired. Oh boy was I tired. But I glanced at this Blog, and the Facebook page, and at our friends over at Skulduggery Forums, just to make sure that no one was posting spoilers. And of course, no one was.
But reading over the Facebook comments, it made me grin when I saw the gradual change in people who weren’t able to make it to Edinburgh. Before the Festival, everyone was saying “Don’t post spoilers! If you post spoilers I will kill you!”
But once there were actually people out there who were reading the book, some of the comments changed slightly... “Ok, ok, could you post ONE spoiler? Just one little spoiler, that’s all I ask... Nothing big, nothing major, just one teensy weensy spoiler, just to satisfy me until I can get the book myself...”
Thankfully, all that appears to be happening is that people are showing the back cover, and the blurb on the back. They’re not even giving away the dedication, or the Author Biography thing.
So, to the people who have the book, thank you very much for not posting spoilers. Now, it’s not going to be easy over the next two weeks, because curiosity is a powerful thing, and some people on this Blog, and Facebook, and the Forums, and all over, will be begging you for JUST ONE LITTLE SPOILER- but you must resist. Giving one person a spoiler could spoil it for EVERYONE- so I’m asking you once again to stay strong, no matter how much they plead or cajole or threaten...

Aww....everyone went to the chat :(
Well, I'll head off then. Bye anyone who's still here!
Hello all!
Hi all! I'm back! What do you think of the new pic, eh? It's all Skully!
Derek, I can't wait for Death Bringer! Dead jealous of all those who went to Edinburgh!
http://theeightgreatimmortals.blogspot.com/2011/03/awesome-derek-landy-picture.html
Thanks Octaboona!
is anyone here? or all on chat?
Anyone here?
I be all alone. I don't know the link for the chat...... *sad face*
Darkane, you still there?
Here's the link
http://xat.com/AquilaFelis?p=0
By the way, if you forget in the future, you can find it at aquilafelis.blogspot.com
It's good to see you, by the way!
~glomps~
It's been ages! Glad you're back :D
Sorry Skyril I was elsewhere. *glomps back*
I DIDN'T WANT A SPOILER!
But then I read this post and now I do. It's not fair.
Also, I just wanted to let you know how many people love your book at my school. I never realised before, but on the last day of school I was carrying Mortal Coil around (I had to take it out of my old locker and it wouldn't fit in my bag) and one of the boys from my class walked up to me and went, "Oooh! I love this book!" He then asked me to have a look at it, and just began reading it in the middle of the corridor. It felt very strange.
Anyway, once I'd pried the book out of his hands a lot more people asked about and commented how much they liked it. In my school, this is big, since the library shelves have ten years' worth of dust on them.
And I'd love to come to your Newcastle signing, as I may have mentioned, but I can't for school. Is there any chance next year of a signing in Durham? Pretty please? With a selection of either cheese or marshmallows on top?
Oh, and I do mean pried. I was late for class...
Have to go now. Night guys.
cannot wait for this book! It is going to be EPIC!!!!!
Gonna try and book the day off work to come and see you in Cambridge but it is a long way. Will try my hardest.
Wish I could have been there in Edinburgh.
Are you going to come back to Milton Keynes at all? Was so great when you came there.
If you are looking for something to do before your tour starts LOL - I know you are crazy busy, but you could take a trip to Kempston to visit me at work in the Library. That would be awesome! It's my Birthday 2 days before your book release and it would be the best birthday present ever!!!
Just a thought. :D
Skulduggery Pleasant Rocks. Derek Landy you are a LEGEND!
Okay, I know you probably won't get to read this Derek, but I just had to say:
I live in Australia. I am your NUMBER 1 FAN! I am also Skulduggery Pleasant's and (especially) TANITH LOW'S ABSOLUTE TOP-OF-THE-PILE NUMBER ONE FAN. So anyway I found out you were going to sell Death Bringer at the Edinburgh Festival and I BEGGED my mum to go. Unfortunately I live in Australia so she wouldn't let me. Anyway my grandparents came back from a trip to Europe the other day and I was talking to my Grandfather. We were chatting and it was all nice and lovely when he asked me if I had read any good books lately. HE THEN PROCEDED TO TELL ME THAT HE HAD BEEN AT THE EDINBURGH FESTIVAL. Because I was talking to my Grandfather I had to refrain from curling up into a little ball, falling of the couch and CRYING. That is all.
The link to that blog of mine.. http://nightlocke.blogspot.com/
I can't wait to see derek in dublin during his signing *-*
Lucky :P
Dear Derek Landy,
You spelt my name wrong.
That is all.
Yours,
Quinnera
:P
Hey Derek,
Thanks fer writing the books.
Also, one question - Favourite movie.
I know it's a really sappy, uninteresting question but it'd be great for you to answer.
Thanks to everyone on the blog who's far to awesome to post spoilers :D
Still waiting by the letterbox for mine.
Yellow?
smello?
Hi Derek!
I'm reposting this or some what like I wrote before, since it got lost ..... stupid computer.
I have a few questions I hope that you will answer... if you will even see this in this mess of spams.
1. Will you come to Sweden some day? I'm not sure that I'll make it to your signings :(
And I know that you have a bunch of fans here too.
We have this local bookstore that buys your books, both in english and then translates it into swedish. But the bookstore fails bigtime since they don't release the original but after they released the translated version. And I'm too afraid to buy it online since I don't want the american version.
2. About the book covers, I have the first three books and they have their pages colored at the end-side. Orange, blue and green.
Why did you stop printing that design? Or did I get some other layout? :/ I really liked the colored ones.
3. Have you any info about the movie? I've heard so much different and fuzzy rumors so I don't know what to believe anymore.
Best regards
/
Linda
:( it's fine. Are you here now, or did you go for dinner?
guess I have my answer. :)
anyone still on??
yup
just me, actually. And I'm really boring unless someone talks to me.
haha, me too!
I'm Ruby, I don't think we've met before!
Just reading these posts somehow makes a semi-crappy day seem much, much better. You can't see it, but I'm grinning, and not just because my Uncle Bob just now stepped right on a plastic fighter-plane and started swearing indiscernibly.
Thank you Derek :D
I didn't know anyone else called their father father besides me xD
That's epic x]
I'm lego. How do you feel about internet hugs?
Ahhhh. So why do I suddenly feel like crying, like my smile's just cracked a thin mask? D:
T-T
*Dunks head in a bucket of cold water*
I love internet hugs!
Hi Pandora! (I don't know you either but oh well as long as we're on Derek's blog we're all friends!! :D)
D: no crying! i don't like crying - makes me sad! WHY YOU CRY PANDORA??
Hi Lego! Hi Rubescent!
(LoL yeah! xD)
*hugs* so what do you do when you're not on here?
I don't know DX
MUSN'T CRY. I SHAN'T CRY! >,<
Stress. I blame stress... >x{
GUYS!
I like crying alright, but I HATE having to hold it in.
What happened, Lego? D:
Blood- Yus! o:
stress sucks. Hi BB!
um...general life? Nothing happened recently, I'm just saying from experience that I don't like holding tears in.
Hi Pandora! Tis Butterflies.
HI LEGO! *glomps* I know. Stress sucks. You have to prioritise to handle it, you know. Time management and whatever c**p.
I hate holding in crying, too, Lego.
If I keep, like, not being here... it's because I'm spacing out. sorry.
I know what the back cover looks like. :]
If I'm too stressed I like to write. But I guess that's just me.
Crying helps too. It's true.
...
And venting. Venting helps!
Hi Blood Butterflies!
*adopts a puppy face*
show us the cover? pweeeez?
*realizes we are in the comments and cannot put in pictures*
Shoot!
I don't have the cover, but it's on facebook.
I'm under constant stress. I haven't really counted, but apparently I have 8 projects due by the end of next week. Shoot.
I like to vent anonymously on the internet. So if you see a question on yahoo answers that's not at all a question, but a giant rant, it's probably me. If I'm stressed, it's mostly stuff that's not going to change in the foreseeable future. And guys! I cooked dinner tonight and it did not suck! Usually it does because I never have the ingredients I need. So a setian stir fry somehow turns into curry pasta.
What, like school projects?
Yeah. History, Chinese, English, Literature, Philosophy, Science, Malay.... don't get me started on it.
malay?
Eeek. I'm not even in school right now. Summer break.
@Lego - hahahah congrats on cooking dinner!
me too, ruby. I'm actually really excited for school this year because through some kind of crazy luck, I got accepted into this half day arts academy thing where I can study creative writing all day. :) And thanks, the only problem is that our whole house smells like olive oil now. :(
Hi kallista! *hugs* What craziness happened?
Study.
Creative.
Writing.
ALL.
DAY?!
WHERE IS THAT AND HOW COME I AM NOT GOING THERE?
Hey Kallista! :D
p.s - for everyone who's not Kallista (because she's already read it) I have a new short story on my blog, http://rubescentsun.blogspot.com
only for half of the day. But it means that I don't have to take gym!! It's in connecticut, in the U.S. I really wouldn't recommend coming here though, as it's a bit boring and the people are generally pretty icky.
*raises eyebrow and contemplates the relatively short drive to Connecticut*
Still, that's pretty cool. My school requires gym, and I can't take a creative writing class until next year. RAWRG. And my school isn't big, but it's not small, and there are the icky people, and then there are the drama and writing geeks, (guess which one I am) so unfortunately sometimes you have to take some classes with the icky people. :(
I mean that the town I live in is a bit of a breeder for icky people, not the academy. Everyone I know who goes there is amazing and wonderful and not the least bit icky. We have to take a movement class, but there's not time in my schedule for gym, so I can just take a modern dance class at the academy.
D: Poor Kallista! You should go to bed, sounds as if you haven't had any sleep!
Wow, Lego that is awesome. :D *wishes I could go there*
*hugs kallista* that really sucks. I sincerely hope you have a better day tomorrow. I'll brb, but my mom needs to to fill out this survey-thingy.
Aww... thanks, Kallista!
Everyone, check out Kallista's writing too! She is an awesome poet!
To my wonderful, obsessed kin.
These are dark times, there is no denying.
Our world has perhaps faced no greater threat than it does today.
But I say this, to our Skultizenry.
We, oh Golden God, ever your servants, will continue to defend your liberty and repel the forces that seek to take it from you.
Your Munchkin Army, remains strong.
would you care for me to explain?
These are dark times, there is no denying. (aptly, the next two weeks for us that weren't at the Edinburgh Fair. Yes, pity, pity.)
Our world has perhaps faced no greater threat that it does today. (1.The Death Bringer is coming, not just the book... although I see that as being more fun than terrible. 2. These happy, exuberant souls have the Death Bringer. We do not. What is there except for our Golden God to stop a spoiler attack?)
But I say this to our Skultizenry. (We are practically (Perfect in every way!) a nation, or a league of Skul-heads, are we not?)
We, oh Golden God, ever your servants, will continue to defend your liberty and repel the forces that seek to take it from you. ( We will literally face The Ancients if we have to.)
Your Munchkin Army, remains strong. (Or at least we'll try to. Without The Death Bringer, our weary bones are almost overtaking our perfect excitement.)
Okay, now that THAT is over.
I am just about ready to sink to the bottomless pits of depression, go lock myself in a room and burn things until I get Death Bringer.
I don't get over stressed and annoyed. I just get sick. So when I am stressed I get sick. I have been sick since sunday. Almost throwing up, headaches, fever, the whole she-bang! Guess why! Oh I'm sure you'll never guess... wait.. no you'll probably guess :)
You know what is making the wait worse!? Your tours! You know what is so bad about them? YOU ALREADY CAME TO AUSTRALIA!!! AND I MISSED IT! I was no where near. you probably flew right over me. Over the gloriously, sunny Coffs Harbour! Unless you had a tour bus. Oh that sounds like fun. I could've come out onto the highway and waved with a little flag.
I know you must hear this an awful lot, 'Hey Derek! Come back to ----!' 'Hey! Come back here at ----! We all miss you!'
but you know what? I'm saying something different. Come back to Australia and and can see the warm sunny beach, and we'll invite Lythia Harpen over from New Zealand and we'll have tea and Timtams! Hear that!?
Next time you are here I will buy you a packet of Timtams. I swear I will. :)
If you do end up reading this which I slightly doubt you will, ( I know, who am I to doubt DL?) at least CONSIDER coming to Australia again. Just bring it up next meeting you have with Harper Collins. Because remember this: out of a trip to Australia you will gain not only meeting me, but also a packet of chocolate biscuits :D
And last but DEFINITELY not least; Holy hell you guys didn't break the internet for once.
Wow.. that was a post and a half!
Hahahahaha - Kallista, someone just pointed out to me a mistake in my new short story - in two different parts of the story, she has two different names...
whoops.
Acacia, I think every single of Derek's minions would agree with me when I say that YES! We WOULD take on the Ancients for him!
Even though he didn't even fly over me! COME TO AMERICA, DEREK!
I know, Kallista! I'm surprised at myself that I didn't notice! I have Skyril to thank for pointing that out to me.
back..I hate taking those surveys. It was all "how jewish are you, and how much money do your parents make, and are you affiliated with a jewish community center and a minyan..." I really don't see why they need me to define all of that just so that they can register my feedback about a camp that I went to. *pouts*
:( poor Lego. At least you're back!
true that. And sorry to rant. :(
I'm reading your blog, Lego! I love how you had the first story about the girl who could fly and then made a poem - I love it in poem form, really kinda breathtaking! XD
thanks ruby! I like writing poems so much more. I can't write action at all, mostly because I don't like reading it. One might wonder why I would then read sp, but I don't have an answer for them. And I desperately need to update, but I don't like any of my poems enough to put them on there.
@kallista- I do that too, when we have one for school, and I mostly just fill it out with drawings or random sentences that pop into my head. :) The problem is that I REALLY like the camp I went to, and I don't want to give them bad feedback, even though my opinion probably wouldn't influence their donors at all.
:( Aw, bye everyone! Sleep summons me! (that and my mom is yelling at me to get off...)
I hope I'll chat with you guys soon!
bye ruby! nice meeting you! *hugs*
So, I've just read the blurb and i was like O_O AMAZING! I've actual never been this excited about a SINGLE BOOK before. oh, i guess i was this excited bout Mortal Coil. God, felt like i only got that book a few weeks ago. So, i don't want any spoilers but I'd love to know where i can see the back cover!
Beware people who spoil, might not end well ;)
Dear Mr. Landy,
Congrats on first comment! *pastes a gold star on your forehead*
Still waiting on those n. Am. tour dates. I think you should schedule them before the rest of the US figures out who you are, so we who already know you will have more time for chatting and hugs and noogies. *nods* If the publisher balks, maybe you could take up a collection from your friends to pay for the trip. You'd just need transport; I'm sure plenty of minions would be happy to let you crash on their couches for a couple of nights and take you to dinner. :-D
I know! You fly to SF. I arrange a goat-sitter for a couple weeks, pick you up and drive you across the US! Then I get to meet a bunch of people, too! And you can fly home from NY.
Just let me know when!
Love,
me
*spies muffins*
*pats tummy*
Dang. Stuffed full of pancakes... I really love muffins, though. Maybe I can save them for later.
*snatches muffins*
*hand gets stuck in trap*
Owowow!
I hope someone lets me out of this before I have to gnaw through my own wrist.
Oh wow!
i just found the back cover, i think it just topped my favorite back covers, if anyone wants to see it who hasn't i am happy to pass on a link. oh, just so you know, it's amazing.
I wouldn't mind a link, storm!
:-P *throws muffins after Kallista*
A Goddess so beautiful

Friends or enemies? (part 1)--> Kal this is for you.
The dark haired girl slipped out of Butterflies’ hold and rocked a punch to Olivia’s abdomen. Her mask was a bright purple with a rose on her cheek. She cried out a victorious yell as Olivia fell to the floor, gasping. She turned to face Butterflies and got a granite fist to her cheek for being troublesome. Kallista whipped an elbow to Butterflies’ ear and yelled, “CHEESE!” Butterflies flipped backwards but never let her eyes leave Kallista. She was her target. She knew what they didn’t.
Butterflies blurred behind Kallista and grabbed her in a choker hold. Kallista wiggled, trying to throw Butterflies off, but her vampirism made it impossible. Kallista felt the choke tighten and she started struggling to breathe and swallow. Finally, she blacked out.
Butterflies let Kallista’s unconscious form drop and wiped the saliva from her sleeve. She helped Olivia to her side. Olivia coughed violently.
“Man,” she groaned. “I should have been more on guard.”
Butterflies rubbed her ear. It was more painful than she thought, especially with the girl and her peculiar rants. Just when they’d brought her in, she had yelled, “You won’t get me! I want my spinach quiche! And a cheese croissant!” Her English accent had begun to get on Butterflies nerves, and even today, it took a lot to do that.
They wanted information on the Purple Roses to collaborate with them. Even so, it would take hours of hard interrogation and torture. But they wouldn’t torture her. They needed her cooperation.
She slumped Kallista into a chair and tied her wrists and ankles with hemp rope. Kallista muttered, “Skyril?” and Butterflies knew she was about to wake up.
“Olivia.” Butterflies said in a commanding voice. “Time to start.”
Kallista came to and Butterflies walked out of the shadows. “What’s this, what’s this?” Kallista mocked, looking around her. “Is this proper treatment for the Beautiful Goddess Queen? I want my quiche Lorraine.”
“You’re not the master here,” Butterflies snarled, then backed down a little and her eyes softened. “Listen, kid, you can have your quiche after you answer our questions. No answers, no quiche.”
“Okay.” Kallista nodded, causing the unwieldy mask to slide a little. “That depends on what the questions are. Why didn’t you say this earlier? Why did you have to knock me out.”
Butterflies breathed in deeply. God, she thought. Please don’t make her annoying. “You were being a little troublesome,” Butterflies explained.
Kallista inclined her head. “I was?”
Sighing, Butterflies dragged her chair over and sat down as well. “Kid, what do you know about the Purple Roses?”
Kallista stiffened. “Purple Roses? Is there even a colour like that?”
Butterflies sighed again. “I’m talking about an organization, kid. You’re not a very good liar, you know.”
Kallista sagged. Butterflies pressed, “What do you know about the Purple Roses?”
“Just joined,” Kallista muttered.
Butterflies locked eyes with Olivia. “Where’s their headquarters? We need to make contact with them.”
Kallista looked up. “Then why can’t I just relay a message?”
“Top-secret.” Came Olivia’s voice.
Kallista looked down at her shoes again. Butterflies reached forward and pulled off the purple mask. “Hey!” Kallista protested. “HEY! Wait! No!” Kallista’s hands were tied, so she tried to snap it back with her teeth. Butterflies pulled it further and further away and Kallista leant more and more forward and then she fell onto her chin.
Butterflies raised an eyebrow. “Oopsie.”
She glanced at Olivia and Olivia frowned. Butterflies twitched her finger and put Kallista back upright.
Olivia walked forward and put her cold hand on Kallista’s forehead and read her thoughts. Her eyes swished from an amused pink to an alarming yellow and finally a blood red. “Butterflies…” she whispered. “The Purple Roses are here.”
Friends or enemies? (part 2)
Just then, someone kicked the door open and yelled, “GET THEM!”
Butterflies stood up immediately and snarled, shadows flaring in her hands. Olivia’s shadows writhed with Butterflies’ intense death, and they vied to get out of her hands. The infiltrators were in purple masks and had seemingly harmless watches around their wrists. Each of them held a hunting knife and a revolver. The girl in front whipped her revolver out and fired three times. Two times the bullets cracked off concrete and the third time, it buried itself into Olivia’s side. Olivia gasped and flew backwards. “OLIVIA!” Butterflies yelled, sprinting to her side. Olivia was badly wounded and was bleeding profusely. Butterflies gritted her teeth against her building rage. It was okay to break in on them, but to shoot her friend? Butterflies ripped her coat off and touched her shoulder’s black butterfly tattoo. It glowed brilliantly black and wings tore out of Butterflies’ shoulderblades. They smoked and were ragged butterfly wings, with the skin and flesh hanging from the frame. She looked up, glowing darkness pouring from her eyes, and said, “You’re gonna pay.”

Eh, Name's Butterflies, Blood Butterflies.
hey this is what i have so far
Today was the day I was finally being adopted I was 13 years old and I had been in the orphanage since I was three days old. It wasn’t an old rundown place it was modern building. I was going to be starting at a new school half way through the year and it was going to be hard. The couple that was adopting me was nice enough but I never really took to new people I was one to sit alone and just read. I didn’t really talk much. I was getting ready to meet with them in an hour I was just going to be myself. I was dressed in my usual shorts and singlet. They arrived half an hour early when I was making a snack. I quickly finished and walk into the dining room where they were sitting signing the last few forms. They wanted to talk to me about how I was going at school and I just answer in my general one word answers. When they had finished they came up stairs to help me finish packing I didn’t have much but we were apparently going shopping that afternoon. I finished packing and Mr. Crusade carried my bags down to their car. I hoped slowly into the back of the car and was really quiet only talking to when I was asked a question.

Masquerade (part 1)
The feathers tickled Butterflies’ face as Olivia helped her put it on. As a non-vampire, Olivia looked something like Butterflies’ mom, but in actual fact, they were very good friends. “Done,” Olivia said, proud as a rooster. The mask slid down Butterflies’ face and covered her eyes.
“Can’t see,” she mumbled and Olivia tried very hard not to laugh. Oliver scratched his neck and his yellow eyes gleamed.
“Meow,” he purred.
“Shut up, Oliver,” Butterflies said, her voice muffled by the mask.
Olivia finally burst out in extremely childish laughter, and Butterflies joined in, the mask jerking along with her shoulders. Finally she calmed down and said, “Hey, give me a hand. Peginterferon will be there.”
Olivia winked, “You’re little boyfriend, right?”
“Boyfriend,” Butterflies nodded, causing the mask to slide down again. “But not little.”
Finally, she was done. She helped Olivia fix her purple mask. ‘Oh, you girls look lovely,” Olivia teased.
“You’re so subtle,” Butterflies shot back. But she glanced at the mirror another time to make sure her mask was in place. It was made of midnight black, and on the brows there was the faint imprint of a raven. Olivia’s was royal purple, and her cheeks were flowered. She stood up, her black dress unfolding with soft rustles. It was a very rare silk, but it costed her almost nothing. 1815, and she was attending her first party.
Olivia took her hand and muttered, “You’re so cold. Are you sure he’d like dancing with you?”
Butterflies replied, “He’s a vampire too, you know.”
“Oh, right.” Olivia grinned.
Butterflies rolled her eyes underneath the mask.
Peginteferon was at the front door, waiting for them. He grinned, and a dizzy feeling swept through Butterflies, like the room had switched places. “You look dazzling,” he said. She walked up and put their foreheads together. “As always.” He said, looking straight into her eyes. She looked straight back, and in her peripheral vision she saw Olivia and Oliver shaking their head in unison.
She grinned.
Masquerade (part 2)
Butterflies sat on the stool, breathing fast and heavy after a whole night of dancing. She grinned at Peginteferon and remembered how he had splashed the fruit punch into the surprised guests’ faces, and set back into another bout of laughter. She gasped as Peginteferon splashed water over her, and then started laughing again. Peginteferon sat down next to her, he himself all wet as well. He shook his head, sending droplets of water flying. He grinned, and she grinned, and they both kissed. It was their party, after all.
Then a window broke.
Sighing, Butterflies stood up and Peginteferon went with her. They got the back of the garden, still pushing each other playfully, and then Butterflies stopped.
“Zombies.” She whispered. “Backtrack. Tell everybody to evacuate.”
They moved backwards and the zombies saw them. “Shit,” Butterflies cursed. “RUN!” she roared.
The place broke out with screams as the people inside realized what was happening. They ran, throwing fireballs, bolts of electricity and waves of shadows. Butterflies ran, trying hard not to trip off her skirt when she accidentally stepped on it and rolled forward. She got up and kept running, pulling her dress off at the same time. She hauled it over her head, revealed her work clothes and flung the billowing dress at a gaping mouth behind her.
“Your dress!” Peginteferon wailed.
“It cost almost nothing!” She yelled back. “Don’t mind it!” She wasn’t wearing her coat and the tattoo showed. They ran all the way to a cliff. “Go!” She yelled, pushing Peginteferon, then using the shadows to cushion his fall. “I’ll hold them off,” she continued, almost inaudibly.
A zombie came at her, and she touched her tattoo. It glowed a brilliant black and wings tore out of Butterflies’ back. The wings, they were ragged butterfly wings, torn and hanging from the bones themselves. She looked up, her eyes glowing black, her full power showing. She roared and the sound itself blasted the zombies in a fifteen metre circle around her. They disintegrated, clawing at themselves as they disappeared. She sent shadows tumbling after a group of zombies and personally attacked another bunch. Her wings beat like demons, sending zombies flying and heads breaking as the bone whacked into them. A big zombie, hungry as ever, tried to bite a bone and was, as a consequence, flung off the cliff to its demise.
Masquerade (final)
Butterflies collapsed in a crumpled heap, her wings fading fast. Two holes in her shirt were left smoking, but her skin was unblemished. Olivia and Oliver came running over. Olivia turned Butterflies onto her back. Her face was charred and ashy. Her breathing was shallow. “Butterflies,” Olivia whispered. “Tell me something. You’re not dead right?”
Butterflies opened her eyes and smiled. “Of course I’m dead. I’m a vampire. And,” she added, wagging a finger in Olivia’s face, “you can’t kill what’s already-”she started coughing violently.
“There, there, take it easy.” Olivia patted her back gently. Peginteferon gasped as he came running up the hill.
“How is she?” Peginteferon gasped.
“We need to get her to that doctor. Kenspeckle. Stop time and rush her there."
Blueness spread over their vision as Peginteferon scooped Butterflies up and ran.
