I only know it's a neurotransmitter, but what in the world does it do?

Hey guys just a little excerpt from something that came across my mind yesterday:
Valkyrie pushed at the air and shot up to her windowsill. She slid open the windows and slinked in with a cat-like fashion. She frowned. Her house was unusually quiet, and her reflection not in her bed. Sensing something amiss, she tiptoed down the stairs to the living room.
She saw a sight she could have done without.
Her parents were slumped over the edge of the couch and traces of blood could be spotted aroung their head area, even from where Valkyrie was standing. Her dark eyes swept the room and her stomach lurched, threatening to come out.
There, in the middle of the living room, arm outstretched for help, gaping hole in his chest, was Fletcher.
Valkyrie could do nothing as she watched a flicker of shadow clamp over his torso cavity and Fletcher jerked, then lay still. Tears came to Valkyrie's eyes and she couldn't hold it back anymore. She let out a sob of fear.
The shadow, as if sensing something, flickered back to what Valkyrie had not noticed before: a mass of swirling shadows. The shadows parted and her exact twin turned to face her, and said in a voice that chilled Valkyrie's heart, "We are Darquesse."
